Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hi.  I had an automatic upgrade to windows 10 from windows 8.1 a approx 18 months ago (maybe longer) and i am wanting to reset to factory settings as i no longer have enough space to get my security update (deleted what i can).  I have tried looking at the system restore but one has never been created.  Is there any other way that i can do this?

Thanks.

Please remember once the eMMC is formatted any data not backed up will be GONE!

1. Boot into Windows 10 Installation USB
2. Select Language, Time and currency format, Keyboard layout (Should default to English (United States and US for Keyboard), Click Next
3. Click "I don't have a product key" at the bottom, Windows 10 Home, Accept the Licease terms, And select "Custom: Install Windows only (Advanced)"
4. Select All Partitions and delete them until you are left with "Drive 0 Unallocated Space"
5. Click the drive and click "New, Apply, and OK to any popups".
6. Select the partition with the most space (In this case should be about 28 or 29 GB) and click Next.

This will begin installing Windows. You will need to install some drivers after Windows is installed and thankfully there are not alot so everything should work out. I will provide a link and a list of drivers to download and install here soon.

System restore wont take you back to Windows 8.1.  If you want to go back to 8.1 then you are going to need to do a complete factory reset using the HP Recovery Manager.  This can be started by pressing F11 when powering on the laptop and selecting your keyboard layout, Troubleshoot, HP Recovery Manager.  Select Minimized recovery and this should restore your computer back to Windows 8.1 and the factory settings.

your pc needs to be repaired.  A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code 0x000000f

Any other ideas?

Sounds like the recovery partition has either been removed or corrupted.  If you want to reinstall Windows 8.1 manually i can help with that.

That would be great.  Thanks very much.

First thing i would like to check is if you have the recovery partition in tact and if you are able to create recovery media using DVDs or a USB drive.  Keep in mind you can ONLY MAKE THESE ONCE!!!

Please follow this guide to attempt to create recovery media for your computer.  I recommend using the USB method and setting that USB aside to prevent it from being formatted by accident.

I have managed to create a recovery USB.

Power off the machine.

plug in the USB and power on the machine.

Press F9 and select your USB from the list.

Follow the instructions to reset your machine.

If you made one from the HP recovery manager then you might have to select troubleshoot, HP Recovery Manager.

Will it then automatically update to windows 10 at some point as it did in the past?  Thanks very much for your help so far, it is much appreciated.

HP Recommended

No.  you would have to manually upgrade back to Windows 10 if you want it.  Just make sure you have Windows updated completely to protect against the Meltdown and Specture vunerability.
