I have used this laptop for 4 years, I'd like to say without a problem, but cannot. However, the latest 'issue' is that when booting up I get a black screen warning, "No operating system found... " (Or words to that effect.) The first time it occurred I simply rebooted and it worked normally. Next time I booted I had the same problem, this time I had to power off and on several times, but eventually it booted up. I check this forum and found a suggestion, Do a hard reset. That worked, once. Did the reset again next time. It took several attempts, but eventually did work.
I really need the machine because my wife is in hospital, so for several days I've left it running. Any other suggestions much appreciated.

I am really surprised that the laptop continues to work at all -- especially considering that you have done reset after reset.
Why?
Because each one of those stresses the drive to completely reset the PC, and if the drive is the original one, I am amazed that it still works -- and if you keep doing this, it's going to fail and not come back.
You need to seriously consider replacing the drive -- as the symptoms sound like the filesystem is becoming repeatedly corrupted -- a strong indication that the drive is failing.

I hope you don't mind my asking one more question. You say that "each one of those stresses the drive to completely reset the PC," I assume you are referring to each hard reset. I don't understand how a hard reset impacts the drive. Maybe we're talking about two different things. What I understand by "hard reset" is to remove all attachments, USB drives etc, and the power supply, remove the battery, and hold down the power switch for 20-30 seconds to drain any residual power, then reboot. Surely as far as the hard drive is concerned this is just a normal boot; or am I missing something?
