Why does my Laptop reboot every time I shut it down.  It has only happened since the last update.  I removed that update, but it is still rebooting when shut down.

Hi @GMS54,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop reboots every time you attempt to shut it down, especially after a recent Windows update, this issue can be caused by several factors. Let’s try to troubleshoot the issue:

Recommended HP Steps to Resolve the Issue

  1. Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure
This helps display any error messages instead of rebooting silently:
    • Press Windows + S, type View advanced system settings, and open it.
    • Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
    • Uncheck Automatically restart, then click OK.

  2. Update BIOS and Drivers
Outdated BIOS or drivers can cause shutdown/restart issues:
    • Open HP Support Assistant (or download it here).
    • Go to My devices > Updates and install any available BIOS or driver updates.

  3. Check for Hardware Issues
Use HP’s built-in diagnostics to rule out hardware problems:
    • Restart your PC and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • Run the System Test or Component Tests.

  4. Update Graphics Drivers
Especially if the issue started after a Windows update:
    • Visit Official HP® Support Downloads and enter your laptop model.
    • Download and install the latest graphics drivers.

  5. Use HP’s Official Troubleshooting Guide
We have a detailed support article for this issue:

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
