I found one of my OLD Laptops.  HP Probook 4540s.  It's about 13 years old. I cannot remember the password to the laptop. Password recovery option states, "NO DRIVE  This feature requires removable media such as a USB Flash Drive. Please connect a USB Flash Drive, and then try again."

So ANY USB Flash Drive?  What do I do?

Hello Traveler_2022,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Password Recovery for HP ProBook 4540s

If you're trying to recover the password for your HP ProBook 4540s and you encounter a message requiring a USB flash drive, here's what you can do:

  1. Use a USB Flash Drive: Insert a USB flash drive into your laptop. Ensure that the flash drive is properly formatted and recognized by the system.

  2. Follow Recovery Instructions: After inserting the USB flash drive, restart the password recovery process. The system should guide you through the steps using the removable media.

  3. Consider Using Password Reset Tools: If the above steps do not work, you might need a password reset disk. Alternatively, many third-party tools can create a password reset disk using another computer.

  4. Use Windows Password Reset Disk: If you had previously created a password reset disk for this laptop, use it according to the instructions that should have come with the reset disk.

  5. Reinstall Operating System: As a last resort, if you cannot recover the password, you may need to reinstall the operating system. This will remove the current password but will also erase all data on the device.

  6. Contact HP Support: If you're unable to gain access using the above methods, consider contacting HP Support for further assistance.

Make sure to back up your data regularly to avoid data loss in scenarios like this.
