Hello,

 

Starting on 2/2/2024 (according to a diagnostic test), my battery power hovered near zero (3%) and will not charge. Laptop is just over one year old. Since then, I've noted that the laptop randomly shuts down as I use it. To be clearer, it powers off then powers back on within one minute and returns to the state it was in when it shut down. I do have to restore web browsers, but everything else seems to be intact. ALSO WORTH NOTING - my laptop is plugged in to a surge protector. On that same day, some sort of electrical explosion (BOOM) occurred outside my house and power went out. Other than as described above, the laptop seems to be working fine.

 

Is it possible that the electrical BOOM damaged/fried the battery, and simply replacing the battery would fix the issue? Has anyone else experienced their laptop randomly going into sleep mode with a battery not charging?

It's certainly possible that the electrical surge caused by the explosion outside your house could have damaged the battery or other components of your laptop. When such a surge occurs, it can affect electronic devices connected to the power source, even if they're plugged into a surge protector.

 

The symptoms you're describing—battery hovering near zero, not charging, and the laptop randomly shutting down and restarting—do suggest a potential issue with the battery or its connection to the system. However, it's difficult to diagnose the exact problem without further testing.

 

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

 

  • Check the Power Adapter: Ensure that the power adapter is functioning properly and that the connection between the adapter and the laptop is secure. Try using a different power outlet or a different power adapter if available.
  • Reset the Battery: Some laptops have a reset button or a reset pinhole on the bottom or side of the device. You can try pressing this button or using a paperclip to press the reset pinhole to reset the battery.
  • Check for Software Issues: Sometimes, software issues can cause battery-related problems. Make sure your operating system and drivers are up to date. You can also try recalibrating the battery through the system's power settings.
  • Test with a Different Battery: If possible, try using a different compatible battery to see if the issue persists. If the problem goes away with a different battery, it's likely that the original battery is faulty and needs to be replaced.

 

Given the circumstances surrounding the electrical explosion and the subsequent issues with your laptop, it's plausible that the two events are related. However, without further examination, it's challenging to definitively attribute the problem to the surge.

Hi Alden,

Thanks for the post. I did end up buying a replacement battery and installing it myself, which took a Youtube video, but it worked. The issue seems to have stopped. The laptop is staying on and the battery is charging.
