When my spectre laptop is running on battery, the system becomes extremely slow and almost unusable. Basic tasks lag significantly. However, when I connect the charger, the laptop immediately starts performing normally and works fast.

I also noticed that when I try to set the thermal profile to "Performance" (via HP Command Center or system settings), it displays a message stating “this mode is not supported when on battery, please plug in your ac adaptor”, and I am unable to increase performance while on battery.

Request your help with the following:

  1. Is this aggressive performance throttling on battery expected behavior, or is it a fault/misconfiguration?
  2. How can I increase or normalize performance while on battery?
  3. Are there any BIOS settings, firmware updates, power management settings, or HP utilities that need to be adjusted or updated?

Hi @Vinzy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The performance issues you're experiencing with your HP Spectre laptop while on battery are likely due to power management features designed to conserve battery life by reducing system performance. Here's what you can do to improve performance when running on battery:

Adjust Power Settings:

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select the High Performance power plan. This plan might consume more battery, but it is designed to maximize performance.

HP Command Center Settings:

  • The message you receive indicates that some thermal profiles, like "Performance," are limited when the laptop is not connected to AC power.
  • Despite this limitation, you can still try setting the thermal profile to "Cool" or "Balanced" to see if it improves performance slightly while maintaining battery efficiency.

Reduce Background Processes:

  • Close unnecessary applications and background processes that start on system boot-up. You can manage startup applications via Task Manager.

Keep System Updated:

HP CoolSense and Command Center:

  • Make sure that the HP CoolSense is enabled, as it can automatically adjust your laptop's performance and fan speed based on whether it is on battery or charging.

Battery Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Battery > Battery Saver, and ensure settings are appropriately configured to balance performance needs.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
