@Ravi_sh, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding OS is Damaged Error on HP Chromebook 14a!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

When your HP Chromebook 14a displays a message indicating that the "OS is damaged," it typically means there's an issue with the operating system or boot sequence. However, if disconnecting the battery temporarily resolves the issue, this suggests a potential hardware-related problem with the battery or power supply components.

Here are a few steps you can take to identify and potentially resolve the issue:

Check Battery Health:

  • Ensure that the battery is not swollen or physically damaged.
  • Use diagnostic tools (if available) through the Chromebook to check the battery's health. Some Chromebooks provide details about battery health in the system settings.

Perform a Hard Reboot:

  • Turn off the Chromebook.
  • Disconnect all peripherals and remove any USB devices or media cards.
  • Again, disconnect the battery if you're comfortable doing so, or if not, you can perform a simple restart after holding the power button for at least 7 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and then power on the device.

Update Chrome OS:

  • If your Chromebook starts normally after disconnecting the battery, ensure that your Chrome OS is updated to the latest version to avoid any potential software issues.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Update: i have changed the battery. The OS damaged problem is solved. Now i have new polroblem. When i plug In power cable and turn ON my chromebook it works fine. Even after removing charger it works fine. But once i **bleep** down and try to turn ON only on battery not on charger..it doesnt turn ON. Once i plug in for 5 seconds and try to turn it ON it agains works fine..even if i remove charger after 5secnds it works fine. What is the problem now? What need to be checked or replaced?

Note: i already formatted everything and software is updates. Hard reset everything done..

@Ravi_sh, Thanks for the update and for sharing your findings—great job on narrowing it down!

From your description, it seems like the new battery powers the Chromebook fine after the charger is briefly connected, but it won’t power on from battery alone after a full shutdown. This behavior usually points to one of two possibilities:

1. Battery Initialization Issue:
Some Chromebooks need a brief charge trigger to initialize the power sequence. This could be due to how the battery firmware communicates with the system, especially if it’s a third-party or non-original battery.

2. Power Management Controller (EC) Glitch:
The Embedded Controller (EC) manages the power sequence. If it’s not detecting the battery properly at boot, this could be a sign of a firmware-related issue or a slight hardware mismatch.

What you can try:

EC Reset (Hard Reset):
Press and hold Refresh + Power for 10 seconds, then release. This can reset the embedded controller.

Check Battery Authenticity:
If it’s not an original HP battery, some compatibility issues like this can happen even if the battery works otherwise.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
