CQ58
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I have a hp company cq58. The monitor has not worked for some time, so I use my T.V as a monitor. I recently updated word and now the tv won't pick up the laptop. I believe it is stuck in safe mode. The last time this happened I used a friends laptop to put my hard drive into to change the settings. Unfortunately I don't have that ease this time. I have tried holding in the power button to reset, I've tried fn +f4, I've tried holding windows key +b +power key for a second. I've even gone so far as to go out and buy a vga cable only to discover my TV takes a RGB not VGA. I disconnected the display ribbon as I read it would automatically pick up the TV as a default. However none of this has worked. The laptop comes on and the orange button stays on then after about 5mins it switches off. I cannot see a thing and have no idea if I have only made the problem worse.

Hi

I realise that you may not be able to do this without a screen, however...
First:- Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.

Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.
Rinse and Repeat; Re-Connect the AC adapter.

NOW begin checking/testing/proving the Hardware is fit for purpose.
Power on your PC, press ESC (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).

HOW DO I USE DIAGNOSTICS?

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows is a Windows-based utility that allows you to run diagnostic tests to determine if the computer hardware is functioning properly. The tool runs within the Windows operating system in order to diagnose hardware failures.
