Hi @Benoit75006,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 5540 printer is showing a message indicating that the paper tray is open or empty, but you're sure the connection is fine, you can try the following steps to resolve the issue:

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check the Paper Tray:

  • Ensure the paper tray is completely closed. You should hear or feel it click into place.
  • Verify that the paper is loaded correctly. Align the paper stack well and ensure it doesn't exceed the maximum capacity.

2. Load Paper Properly:

  • Make sure the paper is not curled or creased. Adjust the paper width guides to fit the paper, ensuring they lightly rest against the stack.

3. Update Paper Settings:

  • Verify that the printer settings on your computer or device match the paper size and type loaded into the printer. Sometimes an incorrect setting can cause this error.

4. Clean Roller and Tray:

  • Open the printer and ensure that the paper rollers are clean and there's no obstruction in the paper path.

5. Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a soft reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it from the power source, waiting for about a minute, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.

6. Firmware Update:

  • Check if your printer has the latest firmware version installed. You can do this by visiting the HP support website and downloading any available updates.

7. Printer Diagnostics:

  • Run any available diagnostic tests from the HP Smart app on your laptop or device to identify and resolve issues.

8. Check Printer Control Panel:

  • Follow any prompts on the printer control panel's display to resolve the "Paper tray Open or Empty" notification.

If the problem persists after following these steps, it may indicate a hardware fault, and you may need to check on the warranty-based support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
