Dear VH2000, thanks for your help so far. To solve the hibernate problem, I have been going thru the action items on https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c03383935 and have gotten to "Step 4, Check for updates from HP, using HP Support Assistant."
Because I currently have the Windows 7 version of HP Support Assistant which wont run with Windows 10, I downloaded a windows 10 version .
I am still getting the same error message "This app can't run on this device. This app can't run because it causes security or performance issues on windows. A new version may be available. Check with your software provider for an updated version that runs on this version of Windows."
Please tell me how I can get a version of HP Support Assistant that will run on Windows 10 on an HP G60-23OUS. JC

If your hiberfil.sys is damaged you will not be able to solve the problem.
As I told you before, you have to delete that first. So run cmd as admin and type
powercfg /H off
reboot and watch the behavior
then go to
and type in your serial number and check if WIN 10 is available.
May be that you can download any HP Support assistant. I don't need that tool.

Dear VH2000, Thanks again for your help.
I am not sure what you mean by 'watch the behavior". Can you be more specific?
"then go to
and type in your serial number and check if WIN 10 is available." Are you suggesting that I download Win 10 again?

No, no, I mean you should check if WIN 10 is available in the OS-selection at the driver site.
For a driver update you don't need the HP Support assistant.

Dear VH2000, sorry for asking but I don't understand
"If your hiberfil.sys is damaged you will not be able to solve the problem.

I don't understand what you mean by '...watch the behavior ..." in the above instruction. JC

Dear VHVH2000, Thanks for your help so far.
I tried turning hibernate off, going thru shut down and start up several times, and documenting what happens.:
a. Hibernate disappears from shut down choices. I select 'shut down' and the system shuts down normally.
b. I flick the power switch, and the internet light goes on, but no other indication. After 10 minutes, still no startup.
c. I flick the power switch, holding it for a few seconds. Internet light goes off. If I switch the power switch immediately there is no effect.
d. If I wait 10 minutes and flick the pwr switch on, the system begins a normal start up.
I then turned hibernate back on, using the Command prompt, Hibernate reappeared in the shut down choices.
Swiching hibernate back on has no effect on the above startup procedure. It is the same with or without hibernate on. And hibernate, which is a great time saver, does not work.
Please advise me what to try next, to get the hibernate feature to work. JC

Dear VH2000, there was no discernable change after the cleanup. The strange switch on procedure is as described before, and hibernation/sleep do not work.
-----------------------------
There was a messsage after cleanup: The restore operation completed successfully.
"The operation completed successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at
windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag. "
----------------------------------
To restate the problem for you, due to an upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10, my on/off feature of the computer is malfunctioning as I described earlier. It takes an unusual procedure to turn on the computer, and hibernate/sleep do not work. I have tried everything you suggested, to no avail. What do you want to try next? JC
