HP Netbook
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Dear Forum Members, I have a Problem with my Win 10 Install on my HP Netbook, similar to the question you answered at https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/Problem-with-Shut-Down-Sleep-an.....  But the solution there doesn't work for me.

I have an HP Netbook, Intel Atom CPU N455 1.66 Ghz, 2.0 GB Ram, ReadyBoost Cache 1.8 GB, 32 bits, Windows 10, Primary Hard drive 214 GB, Secondary Hard drive N/A.

When I installed Win 10, the turn on sequence has changed. I use Hibernate to turn off, but something has changed. With Win 7, when I turned back on after Hibernate, I simply flicked the on switch, and the unit booted up, returning to the apps I had left on when hibernating.

Now, when I try to turn on after hibernation, the unit powers on, but appears locked, with no screen showing. I have to turn the unit off, then on again, and it goes through the complete start up routine, and I have to reopen all the apps that I had hibernated. It is like hibernate does work, and locks up the system.

With sleep, I get the same problem. It is as though Sleep and Hibernation do not work.

It appears that my hibernation and sleep are not operating properly. JC

VH2000 211221 Finally Success!

Dear VH2000, after last I heard from you, I kept trying to continally update my Windows 10 and my drivers. Apparently my Netbook updates very slowly. Since I don't have Internet at home, I took the Netbook to a WiFi location several days in a row and queried Windows updates. Finally today, Dec 21, the power on/off switch started to function properly, so I tried the sleep function and that worked properly also! So I reinstalled hibernate using admin command prompt, and that worked, too!

What do you think caused the change in the power on/off switch?

Thanks for your help. JC

Run this command in cmd (admin)

powercfg /h off

I assume that the hiberfil.sys causes the trouble.

Watch that for a while.

Dear VH2000, the Only Discernable Change by using powercfg /h off, was that now I have no hibernation at all.

I need hibernation as it saves a lot of time.

It saves 3 seconds when you run from a SSD-Drive. And it saves hours you have to spend for troubleshooting when you switch it off.

You can replace the off with on in the command.from above.

Hi@coppens1, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Request you to follow the below troubleshooting steps.

Please follow the below steps:

Step 1: Enabling the Keyboard in Windows

Skip this step if the computer does not enter sleep mode or if the computer wakes unexpectedly.

Follow these steps to enable your keyboard to wake your computer from sleep mode:

  1. In Windows, search for and open the Device Manager.

  2. Click the arrow next to Keyboards and double-click the name of your keyboard.

  3. If the Power Management tab is available, proceed to the next step.

If the Power Management tab is not available, click the Change Settings button if it appears below the Device status box. The same Keyboard Properties window opens with the Power Management tab available.

If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  1. Click the Power Management tab and make sure that the box next to Allow this device to wake the computer is checked.

  2. Click OK, and then test to make sure that the keyboard can now wake the computer. If the computer still cannot wake from sleep mode, continue using these steps.

  3. For instructions on how to update the BIOS of your computer, see one of the following HP support documents: Updating the BIOS (Notebooks)

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Dear VH2000, thanks for your reply.

" I assume that the hiberfil.sys causes the trouble.

Watch that for a while."  Sorry, I don't know how to watch hiberfil.sys.  Can you give me more instructions?  Thanks JC

HP Recommended

The hiberfil.sys is a big hidden system file (4-6 GB) where many settings are saved for a faster startup. That also means that the system never shuts down and restarts from the last settings.
It was introduced to accelerate the startup process for HDDs. It is not needed for SSDs.

When you run powercfg /H off this file is also deleted.

Dear VH2000, thanks for your help so far.  I want to replace my hibernate command.  We spoke earlier about deleting it.  There was no effect.

When I get to command prompt (C:\users\JC) to replace my hybernate command (powercfg.exe /hibernate on) I get the following error: "This command requires administrator privileges and must be executed from an elevated command prompt."

I don't understand, as I am the administrator. How do I get the the administrator prompt?

HP Recommended

😎No Sir!

If you run as admin you get:

C:\Windows\system32>

Look for search box (bottom left) and type in cmd and when a window pops up RightClick on command prompt and select:

Run as administrator

Thanks, I was able to get the administrator comma nd prompt and was able to reinstate hibernate
