I've been dealing with the issue for months now. It stater after some updates HP Support Assistant recomended. The computer won't shut down properly. The screen shuts off but the rest of the computer keeps going and I have to force the shut down. If I put it to sleep or hibernate is the same problem, plus when I open the laptop it does not wake up again. The temporary solution I noticed is restarting the computer and when it logs in, telling it to shut down. It then does it properly. I was recomended before to uninstall the updates, which I did, and the problem remained. A re-installed the updates and I still have the problem. The rest of the computer is working swiftly, the only porblem is the one mentioned before.

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
As I understand the computer doesn't turn off though the monitor/display turns off,
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Did you check power options and ensure the PC isn't set to hibernate or sleep instead of shutdown under choose what the power button does?
Have you disabled hybrid sleep from the power options > advanced options?
While you respond to that, here are a few other things that should resolve the issue:
First, hold down the power button for 10 seconds before releasing it.
Press the power button and see if the notebook now starts.
If it does, let it fully load into Windows and then try disabling Windows 10 hybrid boot - you can do this as follows.
Open Settings and select System. Select Power and sleep, then click on Additional power settings - in the following window, click on 'Choose what the power button does' in the left-hand pane.
In the subsequent window, first, click on 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' ( near the top of the Window ) and then remove the checkmark from the box against 'Turn on fast start-up (recommended)'. Click the Save Settings button, then close any open windows and shut down the notebook by right click the Start Menu icon, select Command Prompt (Admin) and click ‘Yes’ to the UAC prompt.
Type ( or copy and paste ) in the following command ( including spaces ) and hit enter.
shutdown /s /t 0
Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before checking if it will now shut down correctly from the Start Menu.
If this has corrected the issue, it may be worth turning Fast Start-up back on – sometimes just deleting and recreating the file will resolve the problem.
If the issue (with the sleep & hibernation) persists: CLICK HERE FOR MORE STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS.
(by the end of this document, all the issues should be resolved)

It worked! The computer shuts down now properly and the sleep and hibenate are working as well. I didn't get to the document with the aditional steps, the Command Prompt (Admin) segment was all that it took to fix it all.
Thank you for the help!

I'm sorry for the delay, but false alarm. The computer is not shutting down properly again and I have made no changes on the settings besides the ones in the instructions provided to try an fix the problem. It worked for the next to shut downs but by the third time it was back to the monitor turning off but the computer was still running.

I have gone through your Post and would like to assist
Since the issue persists after performing the above steps, I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...
HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook
-
Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
-
Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
-
Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
-
Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Also ensure Windows is up to date.
Select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Hey I have a similar problem but my pcs power button light stays on and the fan spins really fast as it stays that way. Now the difference is that this happens with every type of os. It happens with windows, Ubuntu, Linux mint and even prime os. I really can't figure out what exactly is wrong with it. Any advice would be great

Since you face the same issue with different OS, this cannot be an OS related issue
Please ensure the notebook has the latest BIOS
If the issue persists please contact HP Support for Service Options
