I got a HP Probook 455 g4 from a friend that was damaged. The drive had a virus which my only choice was to wipe it. I hade to replace the battery and keyboard.  Originally it had windows 10 home, but I have license for win 11 pro, so I upgraded.  Whe. I installed and reboot it is asking for the feature byte, ID, model, serial. I have all but the feature byte and I can not find it anywhere.  I need help. It has 16gig, 1 t drive, cd, wifi etc. WHERE DO I GET THE FEATURE BYTE? This is weird that it got lost, maybe the battery being dead for a long time.

Hello Jim11355,

Thank you for posting your concern,

Locating the Feature Byte for Your HP ProBook 455 G4

The Feature Byte is a critical alphanumeric code used for activating certain features on HP laptops after significant hardware changes or a BIOS update. Here's how you might resolve the issue of retrieving or bypassing the need for the feature byte:

  1. Check the HP Support Website:

    • Visit the HP support website and enter your ProBook's serial number and product number. Sometimes details related to the configuration and feature byte might be available there.
  2. Look at Your Device's Documentation:

    • Check any original documentation or packaging, as the feature byte can sometimes be listed alongside the serial number and product number by HP.
  3. Check Inside the Battery Compartment:

    • Sometimes HP includes critical system information on a label inside the battery compartment. Since you mentioned replacing the battery, re-check the old battery for any labels containing random strings of numbers and letters.
  4. Contact HP Support:

    • If these steps do not work, you will likely need to contact HP Support directly. Provide them with the serial number, product number, and other pertinent details. They may be able to provide the feature byte directly or assist you in another way.
  5. BIOS Recovery:

    • If you made BIOS changes and that's when the issue started, consider reverting any changes made. Access the BIOS setup by pressing F10 during boot-up and checking if a BIOS reset option is available.
  6. Replacing BIOS/UEFI Hardware:

    • As a last resort, and if all else fails, there’s a chance that reconfiguring or replacing the BIOS chip or board might be necessary, which would best be handled by HP service professionals.

Since the feature byte is often required following significant hardware changes, especially for devices not originally set up by you, obtaining it from HP is often necessary.
