Following  restart after application of KB5022282 Windows 10 update, the laptop does reboots but does not behave properly. The camera disable key is non-responsive and a small "camera" icon window is displayed bottom center of display and stays on top. Some processes are consuming 15-25% of CPU time each: HP System Event Utility and one labeled simply as "System." A few others are consuming 2-10% each including HP Command Center, BitDefender, and "System interrupts."

 

I was hoping to get some guidance to resolve before I restore to the restore point prior to Windows update.

I spent all day trying to resolve my problems. I was convinced it was a problem with an update since the problems appeared after a reboot following an update. I uninstalled/re-installed software responsible for the CPU-intensive processes. I uninstalled the Windows update. I reverted to the restore point prior to the Windows update. This resulted in small changes in behavior (e.g., the HP System Event Utility returned to modest CPU usage). But the camera shutter key still didn't work and some processes were using as much as 8-25% CPU each (ntoskrnl.exe, HP Command Center, bdservicehost), which caused the fan to run continuously.

 

Before I conceded to "resetting" the laptop - which apparently is a Windows re-installation and would require re-installing all my applications - I decided to call HP tech support and I was transferred to warranty support. (I learned that the Care Pack I purchased with the laptop covers hardware but not software technical support...which I thought was included.) The tech remote attached to my computer and went through a bunch of diagnostics and checking for software/driver updates (nothing had to be updated because I had already done that).

He finally instructed me to press the power button to shutdown and HOLD IT FOR 30 SECONDS (to dissipate any residual capacitance). Then he had me disconnected all peripherals - it was connected to a docking station with external monitor, keyboard, and mouse - and plug in just the charger. The power on and...

 

THAT FIXED THE PROBLEMS.

 

The camera shutter key works. Processes are using modest CPU time.
