HP G70-460US

I just purchased this computer and it has no OS.

First should I use 32bit or 64bit Windows 7?

It oly supports 4GB of RAM so I don't need 64bit, but would it run better with 64bit?

It has the 2.10 GHz Intel Core2 Duo Processor T6500

Second, is there a proper sequence to install the drivers?

Thanks, Fred

There are many other folks that recommend that certain drivers are installed in a specific order.

https://www.pctechbytes.com/hardware/order-to-install-drivers/

I can tell you for a fact that on Intel platforms, if you do not install the Intel chipset installation utility first and restart the PC, many times the Realtek ethernet adapter driver will not install, and will report that the adapter is in 'deep sleep mode.'

That is just one of several potential issues that crop up when the chipset driver is not installed first.

I hope you now both see the benefit of following this commonly accepted guidance.

Hi @Fuzzy42

Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum.

Based on your processor, you need x64 Windows

The order of installing the drivers doesn't matter - whatever you want - you need to install them all.

Download them from > https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-g70-400-notebook-pc-series/3944997/model/3979152

Do not update BIOS.

Hope this helps

Hi, @Fuzzy42

It wouldn't be better with 64 bit, because a 64 bit operating system needs more hard drive space and memory to run than a 32 bit operating system does.

However, 64 bit programs will not work on a 32 bit operating system, but 32 bit programs will run on a 64 bit operating system.

I would say that if you don't have any exclusive 64 bit programs, then a 32 bit OS will be fine.

So the choice would be yours to make.

Drivers...there is a recomended order of driver installation only for a few.

1. Install the intel chipset installation utility and restart the PC.

2.  Install the intel graphics driver and restart the PC.

3. Install the audio driver and restart the PC.

4. Install the Realtek LAN (ethernet) driver.

Then you can install any of the rest of the drivers and software in any order you want.

Your model has the Atheros wlan adapter according to the parts list, so use this atheros wlan driver.

This package contains the drivers for the supported Atheros Wireless LAN Adapters in the supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

I do respect @Paul_Tikkanen but I'd like to add to Paul's comment that based on my knowledge and personal experience, it doesn't matter which driver you will install first (the order doesn't matter).

I don't know and I don't see any benefit or regression if you first install the network adatpers drivers, then audio driver, then graphics, etc  or  vise versa ... order doesn't matter.

But @Fuzzy42 - it is your own personal choice.

Thanks to all of you for the replies.

As a matter of personal preference i always do the chipset drivers first, it was after that things go slightly fuzzy and have fought problems.

I have plenty of disk space, so I'll go with the 64 bit OS.

I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again, Fred

Hi @IT_WinSec,

Why do you recommend not updating the BIOS?

This laptop has the original one?

Thanks, Fred

Followed the link  https://www.pctechbytes.com/hardware/order-to-install-drivers/   that Paul gave me. Everything seems to work fine, but have not given it a rigorous test as of yet.

Installed all the updates to W7 using WSUS offline; plus installed Avast, Office 2003, Firefox, VLC and a few other programs with no difficulty.

Only strange thing was that I use Registry First-Aid for my  registry cleaner and it found 1400+ errors after the OS and updates install.

BTW, how do you get the @name function to work?

Thanks, Fred
