HP 15-ay196nr Laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Forget my last post, my laptop just died.

It started when I sat up to place my laptop down and the screen changed, went blank not completely black like it’s off or sleeping because it was black but there was light coming from behind it. I thought it was sleeping or something so I tried pressing keys and touching but nothing happened so I had to turn it off and on it started up just fine. I expected to see an error message/code but nothing. My laptop was fine for 10 minutes until I sat it down again. The same thing happened but this time it wouldn’t turn on again.

When I press power it sounds like my laptop is trying to start, I can hear the usual start up noises but it just can’t make it. now the screen is black/dark and at least one light is on, the caps lock light, and it keeps blinking and now it’s beeping. signs of life.

It's an HP 15-ay196nr Laptop, 15.6" Touchscreen, Intel® Core™ i7 with Windows® 10 Home.

A blinking "Caps Lock" key typically means that there is a power-related issue, such as an error with your power supply, or that your computer cannot properly ventilate itself. It can often be resolved without needing to take it in for repairs.

  • Reseat RAM
  • Clear Ventilation
  • Power Reset

Shut down your computer, disconnect all connected cables and devices and unplug the power cord. Remove the battery, then press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds. Reconnect the power cord, then try to turn your computer on.

If the power reset and clearing your computer's ventilation does not work, you may need to attempt to replace your battery, AC adapter or power supply.

I recommend you to back up your computer so that you can restore it to a new drive or computer exactly the way you had it, without having to redownload, reinstall, and reconfigure all your apps and settings.

Hello, first of all thanks for replying.

I repeatedly tried your suggestion and nothing, my laptop still sounds like my laptop is trying to start but that’s it. Is there a plan B or is it time to let the patient go?☠️

 Thanks,

JJ

Hi

I didn't have a plan A, I just posted a link.

However....  IF this works it deletes everything.

Turn off the computer.

Disconnect all connected devices and cables, Media Drives, USB drives, printers, & faxes.
Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.

Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second,
until the Choose an option screen is displayed, and then continue.

Plan C would be to try and save the Data.

This may require another PC. Find and Download your .iso from…
W8.x and W10 should activate automagically from their embedded licence key.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Expand/Extract/Burn the iso Image onto a DVD/USB as needed.
Microsoft’s Creator Tool will make the required DVD or USB.

Even though it has NO actual HP software/drivers included, you may be able to
XCOPY the C:\Users\* area onto a ‘large’ USB stick, via the Command Prompt.

You’ll need to try various drive letters; D:..-..Z: until it’s matched - could be G; mine’s S:

C:\>XCOPY C:\Users\* S:\ /e /i /h (then files like those 3 listed below get copied over)

C:\Users\desktop.ini
C:\Users\All Users\agent.1509128044.bdinstall.bin
C:\Users\All Users\HP Deskjet 2540 series\Help\flash\zoom.swf

Then you can try System Recovery Options / Advanced Options shown in the screenshots.
NB: - W10 Begin with the Automatic Repair, then Startup Settings etc.
