Pavilion Notebook 15-ba154nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My original hard drive failed in my Pavillion 15-ba154nr.  I replaced it with a new 480 GB SSD drive and tried to recover the OS using a USB and the recovery software downloaded from HP.  The recovery failed with this message:

I am at a loss on how to fix this.  Alternatively I own a second Pavillion 15  same model.  If the recovery doesn't work can I clone the drive of the 2nd computer and use it on this one?

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with those issues.

 

I have never had an instance where I was unable to clean install W10 using the media creation tool.

 

I usually download the ISO file and burn it to a dvd.

 

If you want to try that, I have zipped up and attached the Microsoft tool you need to transfer the ISO file to a DVD so that it is bootable.

 

In order to boot from a DVD, you have to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot in the BOPS.

I can't help you with why the recovery media didn't work.

 

I would say the most likely reason the recovery image you created assuming you used the cloud recovery client utility was designed to install on the 1 TB hard drive your PC originally came with.  Your replacement drive is less than half the size.

 

Anyway, instead of trying to clone the drive which may also bring the same or other problems, I recommend you clean install W10 using the media creation tool to create a bootable 8 GB USB flash drive.

I tried the clean install media prior to this install. and it failed.  Prior to that I used the recovery usb I received from HP, needless to say that failed 1st.  So this is what happened in order:  

  1. Tried the recovery media usb from HP it seemed to install the OS restarted a number of times but failed on the software install part (#13 here  https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06162205
  2. So I tried the clean install media you suggested but that too failed
  3. I downloaded the recovery media onto another USB drive and tried that and it also failed so I made this post.

All of the failures occur in the software install part.  I ran HP diagnostics on the hardware as was suggested and it all checked out okay.  I notice that in the readouts the 1st failure occurs at the McAffee install.  Could that possibly be the cause?  I saw in another thread where a user was having a similar problem and noted the McAfee error also.

I have never had an instance where I was unable to clean install W10 using the media creation tool.

 

I usually download the ISO file and burn it to a dvd.

 

If you want to try that, I have zipped up and attached the Microsoft tool you need to transfer the ISO file to a DVD so that it is bootable.

 

In order to boot from a DVD, you have to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot in the BOPS.

My bad.  The clean install did work, though I had to create it on a non HP computer.  When I downloaded the file on my working Pavillion 15 and tried to cteate the reinstall USB the media failed.  I tried it again on a Toshiba and created a reinstall USB that did reinstall the OS on my other Pavillion 15.  Thanks for the help!
