System reports that "Your PC needs to be repaired". I ran the System Extensive Test multiple times. All tests PASSED, multiple times.

IMG_1560.jpg

Then I opened a case ($63 -- to no avail ). The support person determined I needed to do a recovery. They sent a USB recovery stick. Folling the instructions that came with the USB the recovery failed. I've retried this multiple times with the same failure. At this point I'm stuck.

Hopefully someone can decipher the log file (Thank you)......

Hi

Quite possibly.

I would look at Paragon Partition Manager, v14 I think is free, and Aomei Partition Tool and view the layout.

These things have the capability to expand and contract partitions 'on the fly' so you do not need to re-install.

Of course a re-install is still an option.

https://www.aomeitech.com/download.html

If in doubt please ask.

Hi

Since the error is a BCD one, it is likely either a Failing HDD or the Boot area is corrupted.

This answer is a bit overlong, but may be relevant...

SELECT SECURE/LEGACY BOOT AS REQUIRED, & CHANGE THE BOOT SEQUENCE ALSO AS NEEDED.

If in doubt please ask.

So did you make a Recovery media? If not try and make one from the info above.

This First part only works when a valid Recovery Partition is enabled.

If it displays an error message then move onto the Second part,
OR if you have data you wish to try and save using the XCOPY command.
Then create your own Repair/Recovery/Rebuild/Re-install media or buy a set from HP.

Turn off the computer.

Disconnect all connected devices and cables, Media Drives, USB drives, printers, & faxes.
Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.

Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second,
until the Choose an option screen is displayed, and then continue.

On the Choose an Option screen, click Troubleshoot, and work your way through the screens.

Second Part:-
This may require another PC. Find and Download your .iso from…
(You will need a NON_OEM key for W7;
W8.x and W10 should activate automagically from their embedded licence key.)

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

For when it’s a NON MS OS ( iOS / Linux ) creating the install media.
www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

A 3rd party site like…
heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-and-office-iso-download-tool

Expand/Extract/Burn the iso Image onto a DVD/USB as needed.
Microsoft’s Creator Tool will make the required DVD or USB.

Even though it has NO actual HP software/drivers included, you may be able to
XCOPY the C:\Users\* area onto a ‘large’ USB stick, via the Command Prompt.

You’ll need to try various drive letters; D:..-..Z: until it’s matched - could be G; mine’s S:

C:\>XCOPY C:\Users\* S:\ /e /i /h (then files like those 3 listed below get copied over)

C:\Users\desktop.ini
C:\Users\All Users\agent.1509128044.bdinstall.bin
C:\Users\All Users\HP Deskjet 2540 series\Help\flash\zoom.swf

Then you can try System Recovery Options / Advanced Options shown in the screenshots.

NB:- W7 Try running a Startup Repair more than once for a full fix.
NB: - W10 Begin with the Automatic Repair, then Startup Settings etc.

From either the C:\ or the X:\ prompt try the following

cd boot
bootrec /FixMBR
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /RebuildBCD

If the above FAILS then please try:-

I did not make my own recovery CD when laptop was new/operational.

After 14 months of use the BCD became corrupt in some way so now the system won't boot.

So, HP sent me are recovery USB stick for my model.

Prior to attempting recovery I ran the System Extensive Test multiple times without error.

When I attempt recovery per HPs instructions, it fails. See screen shot I posted earlier.

I'm hoping someone can interpret the log file that I posted earlier. This is the only information the Revocery Manager provides about the failure.

HP Recommended

Hi

The Blue screen says BCD failure.

Either a failing Hard Disk or Corrupted Boot area or both in my view.

Make a Repair Disk if you can and use it.

HP Recommended

What do you mean by "Repair Disk"?

If you mean recovery media then I've received recovery media from HP and used it in the recovery process.

The recovery failed. Please see recovery error log file I posted earlier. I suspect only an HP software developer can interpret the contents.

Hi

If the hardware is still viable, then make a repair disk.

The output you posted is probably MS related and does say BCD somewhere.

Thank you! I'm up and running with one issue.

First, I had to work all the way through to "If the above FAILS then please try" in the "Second-Step".

The issue is that the PC has a 1 TB drive. Now it has 90 GB Windows (C:) drive. I did not create or modify any partitions. Instead the installation presented list partitions on which to do the install. How these partitions got there is a mystery . So, I choose the largest one which was only 90 GB. So I got what I asked for.

I now realize that I may have had the opportunity to create or modify a partition. If this is the case then I'd like to circle back and redo the install on a much larger partition but am afraid that I might get into a bind and wind up not have a working PC. Should I leave well enough alone?

The small partiiton problem is solved.

I re-installed windows wth media created from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 in

"Second-Step" , only this time chose the largest partion for the install.

Thanks for your help.
