HP ENVY x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
I was trying to fix my laptop because the screen display is supposed to switch to tablet mode and the keyboard (which is now exposed) is supposed to turn off and not get any input. Well that whole switching to tablet mode/turning off the keyboard hasn't worked and the HP support forums suggested it was a windows update that caused the problem and to try a system restore. I had already tried to reinstall the drivers to see if that was the issue but after downloading and reinstalling them the problem was still there.
So I backed up everything and used the HP Recovery program to do a full system restore.
About an hour and a half into the restore, a message comes up on screen saying "System Restore did not complete successfully. Choose an option" and I can either Save Log, View Details, Retry
Retry brings restarts the computer and then the error message pops up again. View Details brings up a notepad document that says:

I've also saved the log if that's useful. This is the second time I've tried to restore the laptop                                                          through the Recovery Manager and it still does not complete. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You're very welcome.

The same thing happened to me when I tested out the cloud recovery client.

It was going great guns, and then all of a sudden it failed.

Seemed like it was almost done creating the media too.

Oh well...plan B (Media Creation Tool) should work just fine.

Hi:

See if your model is supported by the HP cloud recovery software and if so, make the bootable installation media to factory reset your PC that way.

If your PC is supported by the HP cloud recovery software, it will be listed on your specific model PC's W10 driver page.

If not, I would clean install W10 using the Microsoft  W10 media creation tool at the link below, and then install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

Thanks for the reply.

I checked and this laptop is supported by the HP cloud recovery software. However, I've tried to create a bootable USB twice and both times it has failed. I'll try the windows 10 creation tool and hopefully that will work. Thanks again for the advice.

Laptop is up and running windows after using the creation tool so at least it is functioning now. Just finished downloading the drivers so hopefully after I install them that will fix the original issue of the laptop not realizing it has been folded into tablet mode. If not, oh well, I have exhausted my computer knowledge.

The only issue I'm facing now is that the HP Recovery Backup that I created before all this began is not working. I have inserted the USB and hit Restore.exe and the program pops up. As soon as I hit next it freezes and I get the "program is not responding" error. Is there a way to get my backed up files off of there without using the recovery program?

Unfortunately, that I do not know.

I use the old fashioned method of copying and pasting my file folders to a portable hard drive so I don't run into those kind of issues with proprietary backup programs that use odd file types.

I also use the free Macrium Reflect to create system images periodically.

That would restore my drive to the date of the last backup, and in the event it didn't work, I clean install Windows and copy and paste my files back into the new installation.

If the recovery manager created .WIM files, there is a way you can read and copy those onto your new Windows installation.

Final update!

All the drivers successfully installed and the laptop is working as a convertible tablet again. I can't tell you what I did to fix it, but I guess a fresh install of windows plus all the drivers worked.

As for the backup files, they were all .swm files and I was able to use 7-Zip to open the archives and see which files were which, then copy over the ones that I needed.

Thanks so much for your help. I wish HP's recovery tools actually did what they advertised. Each one of those programs failed and I was left to alternate methods to get this laptop back up and running. Hopefully this helps anyone else in this situation!
