I'm in a bit of a pickle. I received this laptop from my sister who just got an upgrade. She had gotten it from her school preconfigured but I guess they forgot to remove the BIOS password.

I have already tried contacting support about getting a bin file to load at boot that will reset the password, but I was told they no longer do this as of like 10 days ago. I have also tried removing the battery and CMOS battery for varying lengths of time. Also, because of the way the BIOS is configured, I cannot boot from a flash drive or separate hard disk. I can't use any of HP's utilities either, because I'm on Linux, and as far as I can tell they don't support it.

The reason for all of this is that I just bought a new SSD to replace the drive inside of the laptop, but as I mentioned before it won't let me boot anything other than the original HDD. Hopefully this can get resolved before this Sunday morning, as I plan on taking this on a week long camping trip. Thanks in advance

Hi:

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to help you since HP quit supplying the required SMC.bin file to clear the password.

That was the only way it could be done.

I see that HP issued this document recently...

Also the forum rules were amended on 1 March 2019, which no longer allow us to help with providing unlock codes, etc., to clear BIOS passwords.   Rule 4.d...

Hopefully you can return the SSD or use it in another laptop or desktop PC.
