It's been at it for a while, not an hour though, and I just wanted to know if there's any way I can safely restart the computer just so I can transfer some files to a external hard drive? I want to restart it without losing any files or causing and damage to my laptop of its server. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Hi @ivan51019
Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting!
* It has been about 8 hours since you posted in the forum and I hope Windows has completed its procedure.
Can you tell me what is the latest on this from your side ?
* Can you successfully boot to Windows ?
* Would you be able to test your hardware for issues ?
1. Please, shutdown the computer using the power button
2. Power it on.
2.1 As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) even before logo appears
This should open a HP Startup Menu
3. Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics (or the respective F button for diagnostics).
Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.
This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JXUp43ahHA
If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform hard disk HDD and RAM memory check.
Let me know the test results.
Looking forward to your feedback/reply

The failure ID I got from the test was: U4H263-7P48LK-XD7WMG-06VF03
Do you think there's any way I will be able to recover my documents? I am a university student and have my exams in less than a month (starting 17th June). These files are very important to me and are definitely needed for my studying working up to exams. Also, I have a huge assignment due Tuesday (20/05/17) worth a huge percentage of my grade, and can't do it without the files. Please help, I also don't have a External SATA. And also don't really have the funds at the moment for a repair - but may still have my warranty.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance

Hi @ivan51019
Thank you for following the instructions correctly.
Unfortunately, your HDD has failed. I can't check the details or the error and I also cannot check your warranty because the code U4H263-7P48LK-XD7WMG-06VF03 appears invalid in the tools I checked in. Are you sure it is correct ?
If your PC has active warranty, HP should replace the faulty HDD for free. Let me know if this is the case.
Your DATA/FILES
Here is a way - some instructions with options to access the data stored on the HDD - since the HDD is corrupted there is no guarantee it will work but you could give it a try:
You will need :
- either 1 empty/blank USB thumb drive OR 1 empty/blank DVD disk
- Linux based operating system - free to download - e.g. Ubuntu or Linux Mint
* You can directly download Ubuntu Desktop from Ubuntu's web site:
Download the x64 ISO > https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop
* Once ready, you need to write the ISO to make a bootable media (e.g. bootable DVD or USB drive). Here is how:
How to create bootable ISO on USB device >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
or
How to write ISO to DVD >> http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/burn-a-dvd-on-windows
* When ready with the USB drive or with the DVD:
* Ensure Secure Boot is disabled (if applicable for your model)
* Ensure Legacy mode is enabled (if applicable for your model)
* Save the UEFI/BIOS changes.
(if applicable for your model) Details>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03653226
* Eventually, please, shutdown the computer using the power button.
Insert the Ubuntu USB thumdrive or the Ubuntu DVD prepared previously
Power on the PC.
As soon as you press the power-on button, keep hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap).
This should open a HP Startup Menu
Choose F9 to open Boot options. Select the thumb drive as boot option.
Follow the on-screen instructions to run Ubuntu (not install it but try it).
Ubuntu should load. You can try to see if it will be able to mount your existing HDD. If possible, you may be able to browse your files and copy what is necessary to a online Cloud storage service or to another device.
Hope this helps.
Looking forward to your feedback/reply

Thank you for your help! Unfortunately, I'm unable to recover any of my data using that operating system. I will probably just take it back to the store I had bought the laptop from, and hopefully the warranty can cover the costs for recovering data, and get my laptop fixed or replaced.
Thanks again 🙂

I followed all the steps listed, and the test shows "Hard Drive Short DST Check : FAILED."
The ID is GURWMX-8R29QG-XD7URG-60RL03 .
I'm doing this for my little brother while he's away at a friend's house 'cause his computer has Minecraft... I mean- I'm doing this as a surprise. Yeah. In all seriousness though, my username isn't a joke. Sometimes the fan makes a sizzling sound when it activates. This might be dust or something, but that won't stop me from worrying.
Thank you!

Dear @HlpMyCpuSizzles
Thank you for posting in the HP Support Community! Welcome !
It seems great you are trying to help your brother.
The problem is a hardware issue. Also, the error code you provided confirms that the hard disk drive (HDD) has failed. Since this is faulty HDD/hardware component, you will probably not be able to recovery your files. If you want to attempt data recovery, please let me know and I may post additional instructions.
- I also checked and found that this PC is out of warranty. Therefore, you will need to buy and replace the disk on your own (for for free by HP).
- Check the TKB article about such issues >> https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Knowledge-Base/Storage-Hard-Disk-Drive-corruption-and-replac...
You can buy HDD or SSD from online or local tech stores, and replace it on your own or contact HP Authorized Service center for assistance. Refer to the product model service manual (page 45/55) >> http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06147959
Last part - once you replace the faulty HDD component - you will need to reinstall back your operating system
Let me know how it goes. Provide an update or feedback.

Alright! And as for the fan sizzle? Could the hardware failure have something to do with that?
Also, do you want the model to say which specific part is necessary, or is the faulty part universal?
Is there anyone I can contact to have the part replaced?
And finally, how much does this usually cost? Would I be better off just surprising him with a brand new computer? (He only has free games and youtube on there, so it's not really worth it if the part costs more than a computer.)

>> The fan is considered hardware, so it is a hardware problem. But this is not connected to your hard disk drive problem.
Also, do you want the model to say which specific part is necessary, or is the faulty part universal?
>> No worries, I know your model. The code you provided above is a kind of cipher and it tells me your warranty status, serial number, product model and number, details about the detected hardware problem. Your model is HP Notebook - 15-bs070wm
Is there anyone I can contact to have the part replaced?
>> As with the hard disk drive, you can reach to HP Authorized/certified service center.
You can find HP service providers here :
or >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/service-center
And finally, how much does this usually cost? Would I be better off just surprising him with a brand new computer? (He only has free games and youtube on there, so it's not really worth it if the part costs more than a computer.)
>> I am afraid I cannot tell exactly how much this will cost - if the PC is out of warranty they will charge for services + for the parts.
The hard disk drive or a solid state drive is a cheap. Fan is also not so expensive.
This may be a problem or may not be a problem. It may be a dust, might need thermal paste replacement or might need fan replacement. This noise is something specific which I cannot hear since I am not near the PC. It needs to be checked by a technician if it worries you.
If you decide to do it on your own, you may watch this video:
Fan part number should be 925012-001 and can be purchased online from HP Parts Store >> http://partsurfer.hp.com/
The fan replacement procedure can be found here (page 57/67) >> http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06147959
Hope this helps
