Hi @Sam_1207,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It's concerning when a new gaming laptop starts restarting during gameplay, and this can happen for a few reasons, especially with a demanding game like Valorant. Here are some steps to help diagnose and resolve the issue.
Check for Overheating
- Monitor Temperatures: Use software like HWMonitor, Core Temp, or the OMEN Gaming Hub (if pre-installed on your HP laptop) to check CPU and GPU temperatures.
- Ensure Ventilation: Make sure the laptop is on a flat, hard surface to allow for proper airflow. Consider a cooling pad if you notice high temperatures.
- Clean Air Vents: Dust in air vents can restrict airflow. Carefully use compressed air to clean vents if they look dusty.
Update Graphics Drivers
- Go to the NVIDIA or AMD website (depending on your GPU) and download the latest drivers.
- Alternatively, use the HP Support Assistant software to check for driver updates, as HP sometimes offers optimized drivers for their hardware.
Check Windows Event Viewer for Errors
- Open Event Viewer by searching it in the Start menu.
- Under Windows Logs > System, look for any errors or warnings that happened around the time of the restart, specifically "Critical" entries with Event ID 41 (Kernel-Power), which often indicates an unexpected shutdown due to power or overheating issues.
Disable Fast Startup
- Sometimes, Fast Startup in Windows can cause issues with certain hardware configurations.
- To disable it:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup and save changes.
Run Hardware Diagnostics
- HP laptops come with built-in diagnostics that you can access by restarting the laptop and pressing the F2 key repeatedly until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI menu appears.
- Run a comprehensive test to check for any hardware issues, including the battery and power components.
Check Power Settings
- Make sure the laptop is set to High Performance under Power Options.
- If it's running on battery while gaming, connect it to the charger, as gaming typically requires more power than the battery alone can provide.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
