Thank You!
If I need a external HDD besides the one I have with the Windows 7 Backup I don't have one large enough meaning 160 plus GB. Yup today that considered small but I don't do much of this kind of thing obviously and using DVD's is silly.
Enclosed is a couple of shot from the Linux Mint desktop. But, again I'm not sure How To access the files/folders/photos and so on. Please advise as best as your able. I really appreciate your patience. Best, Raphael
The same Permissions are offered with the WindowsImageBackup just didn't think it was needed to show you.Linux.pnglinux2.png

The Linux equivalent of zip is an app called ark. It should be able to extract thise compressed files onto a location you pick. What exactly are you trying to do? Do you want to extract the backed up files onto another external hard drive or place them on the hard drive (storage) into the new Windows installtion?

ARK.pngG'day Huffer!
Thank You!
Mainly was trying to look at the photos which might be in a Downloads folder?!?
NOT sure where the best would be to place these files? HD/external HD, Hard drive storage? The thumbdrive is only 8 GB and I had to convert it to NTFS in order to be used it was FAT32. But, not big enough as far as I can to do what I;d like.

it would be great if I could look at the various folders temporarily once I found what I was looking for just take a screenshot or copy of it and this would be over with I need to open to open the entire backup image I guess it is the correct wording?
Uncharted territory Huffer.

please advise when you have a chance cause I'm stuck in the mud.
Cheers, ralph

Here is what I see 320 GB when I typed ARK in the search box in Linux Mint

There really is no way to preview the files in the compressed folder without extracting. I would extract (restore) to an external medium so as not to fill up my internal storage. Advanced compression software like WinRAR can likely handle .vhd archives

Again! THANK YOU Huffer...

Would you please provide a brief tutorial  on the simpliest way to do this and whats the best Backup device to accomplish this with? Never thought this would require such time and effort when I did the backup and switched to Windows 10.
Sincerely, Ralphie

How large are the archives you are trying to restore? That will determine what you need to use to store the extracted files.

Paragraph 2 here explains it

Good afternoon,
Thank You!
If you go back to this post 09-16-2023 12:12 PM it shows the external HD about 50% full.
As far as I can tell the WindowsImageBackup is about 139-140 GB. Not knowing What exact Folder(s) the information I'm seeking may be in it would seem I'd have to Backup the entire WindowsImageBackup? Would I be able to uses the same External HD seeing there appears to be 160GB free remaining?
Best, ralphie

Had to Turn on File history (It was Off) and as far I can tell that's where the figures below came from?!?
The Pass External HD: is showing a Red line  18.9 GB free of 298 GB

You are showing the compressed size. Figure it will take about twice as much space to hold the extracted files. If you do not know which of the .vhd files contains the actual files you want to look at you really have no choice but to unpack all of them. They will unpack into a file structure like a Windows installation. You will have documents and downloads, etc. inside a folder just labeled with a drive letter like "C". Better get at least a 500 gig disk to hold the extracted files.

This is getting stupid...
