Rip Van Winkle--problems with win 7 and dv2500

The dowloads fixed the missing drivers but still no DVD listed.  HP advisor mentions a Vision diagnostic which I have attempted to find but cant (to download).  There is also another diagnostic tool that is supposed to be installed on this pc but isnt.  I upgraded to 7 last week but do know the dvd was not working before in vista.  Your comments about heating up make me wonder if the chip is toast or the drive is bad.  This thing gets hot?!  YOu have been helpful, I think I need to hang this up for tonight and start fresh tomorrow

Since the drive is showing up in the BIOS, something may be wrong with the drive.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to:

Remove the DVD drive.

Run the PC w/o the DVD drive in it.  Get into windows for a few minutes.

Shut down the PC and perform a hard reset.

Then reinsert the DVD drive, power up the PC and see if it is recognized.

Well, it was a good idea but it didnt work.  I took battery out, unplugged pc, took drive out.  Did the reset, and powered up.  Interestingly enough I got an error "disk read error occured" press crtl+alt+del.  I suspect the pc was following the bios boot order and could not find the dvd drive.  Anyways, powered up and let sit for a few miuntes.  Then,  installed drive with power on.  The hard reset link said to do this, you indicated to turn it off.  Either way I dont think it matters.   The drive was not seen by pc.  I even ran device mgr and scanned for hardware changes, nothing.  

I can try it step by step again, both ways as it is easy but I can buy an ext drive from amazon for $12-$30, and I have spent much more than that in both of our time.  If you can think of anything else I am all ears but it is time to admit defeat and buy an external drive.....

Thanks for all your help.  You got me up and running on 7 whic was the big deal.  I am not sure when this drive stopped working, and it could very well be the reason it was given to us....Jim

New ext. drive came from Amazon today, plugged it in and it worked!  Therefore, old internal drive was bad....thanks for all your help.
