Hi @NickyHelp,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for reaching out, and no worries about not being tech-savvy. I’m here to make this easy for you!

If your used HP notebook laptop is extremely slow even after a factory reset and updates, there are still several things we can check and improve before giving up on it.

Steps to Speed Up Your HP Laptop

1. Check for Background Apps

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Look at the Startup tab and disable anything you don’t need (like Skype, OneDrive, etc.).
  • In the Processes tab, check if anything is using a lot of CPU or memory.

2. Upgrade to an SSD (if not already)

  • If your laptop still uses a mechanical hard drive (HDD), upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) can make it 10x faster.
  • This is the single biggest speed boost for older laptops.

3. Check RAM Usage

  • If your laptop has 4GB or less RAM, it may struggle with Windows 10 or 11.
  • Upgrading to 8GB or more can help with multitasking and responsiveness.

4. Run HP Support Assistant

5. Disable Visual Effects

  • Go to System > Advanced system settings > Performance Settings.
  • Choose “Adjust for best performance” to disable animations and effects.

6. Scan for Malware

  • Use Windows Security or a trusted antivirus to run a full scan.
  • Malware can slow down your system even after a reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
