Example: 17t-cg100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a new 17t-cg100 with a 128gb ssd and a 1tb hdd. I had wanted to upgrade the ssd to a 500gb and eliminate the hdd  but when I booted from a usb drive that I created from Microsofts web site I got as far as selecting where to install and the new drive was not detected. I did have safe mode disabled in BIOS and usb as first boot device. The drive shows up in BIOS and diagnostics show it is working properly.

I put the original ssd & hdd back in, ran setup and have the same problem so basically I found a issue that already existed because if I had not tried to change the drive and had to reinstall Windows down the road I would have ran into this problem.

Now, like an idot I called customer support , explained the issue and was told normal tech support would not help since I am using a non HP part. I was told that I could buy a subscription to "Smart friends" that would help me with an issue like this and was transferred to someone that explained that buying this would give me this additional support ALONG with my 12 month manufacturer warranty until 01/22. Well I bought it got transferred around to a few more people and in end the was told sorry you voided you manufacturers warranty and if you want it fixed you need to send it in and pay for it.

Any help would be appreciated. I've been researching and trying to troubleshoot this for a few days now.

Hi:

Any of the specs I can find online indicate your notebook comes with an Intel 11th gen core processor.

If that is correct, there is an extra step you need to do to install W10...

See the info at the link below.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-15-f2000-laptop-pc-series/35900344/model/35900346/document/c...

The link they direct you to the HP support site doesn't work.

Here is the link to the driver you need...

This package contains the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology is designed to provide functionality for the Intel Storage Controllers. The driver improves Serial ATA (SATA) disk performance with Native Command Queuing.

18.0.1.1138

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp108501-109000/sp109000.exe

There is another thing I don't understand in that document, and that is where HP tells you to right click on the Intel driver file and select Extract to

When I ran through the steps, I don't get an Extract to option when I right click on the file.

So, if you have the same issue, download and install the free 7-zip file utility from the link below.

The 2nd file at the top of the page is for 64 bit.

7-Zip (7-zip.org)

Then you can right click on the exe file, select 7-Zip from the menu, and select Extract to: and let it extract the file into its folder name (sp109000), and copy that folder to your USB flash drive, and continue with the instructions.

You are correct that it's 11th gen i5. I don't know how you figured out which driver it was because according to the info in the link you sent you should look it up by machine serial number and mine returns "No drivers found" and I have the option to select by operating system and when I do I get a list of rst drivers but not the one you found. I was swearing at the machine for a while because I was missing one vital step to point the installer to the "f6 file in the folder" and not just open the folder and point to it. Also for anyone that needs this info in the future I put the driver on a separate usb drive just so there was no conflict with the install files and I also found that the driver does not install permanently you have to load it every time you go to install Windows. I even tried from the desktop to run the installer and it will not install. Also I did have to use 7 zip to extract the files.

I cannot thank you enough for your help!!!!!!!

You're very welcome.

There are several different model HP notebook's with the 11th gen core processors.

I used the driver from a different model notebook that did have the IRST driver for the 11th gens.

Yes, you would have to use that method every time you install W10 on an 11th gen core processor.

Hopefully, the next build of W10 will have those drivers included.

This reminds me of the old days when XP didn't have the storage controller drivers you need to install it.
