HP Envy m7 -u109dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Envy laptop had originally a 500 GB HDD I clone that drive onto a 1 TB SSD (WD BLUE). two days ago the drive failed, it seems as to be hardware failure, for I have tried everything possible with any software that I have and did so on different systems by putting drive into a USB enclosure, as soon as I connect that drive to a computer it freezes, if I turn on any computer to which I have connected the drive to a USB port prior to turning it on, it simply do not advance towards booting.

All WinPE USB drives and/or discs with plenty of troubleshooting tools also freeze, the only one that advanced towards booting but finally without any of its tools detecting the failed drive was the new version of HIren's BootCD PE

The problem is that I had the rescue partition on that drive too, what can I do to be able to use a different SSD on my HP Envy, for I don't want to buy a copy of Windows nor go through the process of searching for the particular drivers for the peripherals in my laptop.

I lost my OS and the capacity to reinstall it, please help, thank you.

It was OK to run that on W7, and sorry it didn't work.

If the other tool asked you to enter the serial number of the notebook instead of the product number, that tool is only for HP business- class PC's.

Try the tool from the Microsoft Store...

Get HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Microsoft Store

If it still doesn't work, your other option would be to make bootable W10 installation media with the Media creation tool from the link below.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

HP ENVY Notebook m7-u109dx Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Customer Support

After you get things set up the way you want, you can use the free Macrium Reflect software to create a a system image of your drive's configuration and save it on a portable hard drive.

The download you want is on the left side of the webpage under the Backup at Home section.

Macrium Software | Reflect Free Edition

The software will also have you make a bootable rescue DVD or USB flash drive that you can boot from to access the system image stored on the portable hard drive.

Then in just a couple of mouse clicks, your drive will be restored from the image you created.

Hi:

You don't need to pay for a new copy of Windows since the W10 product key is in the BIOS.

Your notebook should be supported by the HP cloud recovery tool which you can use to make a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook on the replacement SSD.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility...

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10, 7) | HP® Customer Support

You will need to use another Windows PC running Windows 7 64 bit or newer to use the cloud recovery tool since your PC is not working.

You're very welcome.

Running the HP Cloud Recovery tool I get the following message: "The authentication is invalid or expired. Please update HP Cloud Recovery Tool to latest version." 😞
I truly do not know what that means, I managed to find another HP tool simply called" HP Cloud Recovery, on this application it prompts me to enter serial number (I did) and model name from a drop down list where my HP Envy Notebook m7-u109dx is not listed.
Regardless, I truly appreciate your prior response, thank you.

P.S. I did this using a system with Windows 7 64bit, for I have no access to my Windows 10

This last instruction seems to be my only option, I follow these instructions.

Just one last question even though you've already told me that the serial resides in the BIOS, should I have to purchase the Windows 10 copy I am downloading now? I have all type of info on a label attached to the laptop box (which I still have)

Thanks again Paul! 🙂

Hi:

You will not have to buy W10.

It won't even ask for a product key when you go to install it.
