Subject: 3F0 Error / "No hard drive installed" - Need advice on Data Recovery costs in Japan

Message:

Hi everyone,

My HP laptop recently crashed and won't boot, giving me the classic 3F0 (Boot Device Not Found) error. I ran the built-in F2 Hardware Diagnostics, and it immediately failed with the message: "No hard drive installed."

I've already purchased a replacement SSD to get the laptop itself up and running again, so I'm good on the hardware repair side. My main challenge right now is data recovery. It seems my original SSD is physically damaged or completely dead since the motherboard can't detect it at all.

I am currently based in Japan and will be contacting local professional data recovery services. Since the drive isn't recognized by the system at all, I suspect it will require advanced physical recovery in a cleanroom.

Has anyone had a similar experience with a dead SSD? If so, could you share a rough estimate of how much professional data recovery might cost for a drive in this condition? I would love to know what price range I should expect before handing it over to a technician.

We understand that you are encountering a 3F0 (Boot Device Not Found) error and that the system diagnostics indicate “No hard drive installed.” Based on this, it does appear that the original SSD is not being detected and may have failed.

 

Regarding Data Recovery

HP does not have information or estimates related to third-party data recovery services or associated costs, including services in Japan. Data recovery, especially for physically damaged SSDs, is handled by specialized providers, and pricing can vary depending on the extent of damage and recovery complexity.

 

Recommended Action

For the device itself, we recommend contacting an HP Authorized Service Center. The support team can:

  • Confirm the hardware failure 
  • Assist with the installation and setup of your new SSD 
  • Ensure the system is functioning properly after repair 

 

Important Note

  • HP service centers typically focus on hardware repair and replacement.  
  • For data recovery, you may still need to work with a professional data recovery provider, especially if the drive is not detected at all.

Thank you for the quick response and for clarifying HP's position on data recovery.

I wanted to provide a quick update, as I performed some extensive cross-testing yesterday which points to a more severe hardware issue:

 

I installed a brand-new, compatible M.2 NVMe SSD into my HP laptop, but the F2 diagnostics still display "No hard drive installed."

 

I then tested my original, failed SSD in another fully functional computer, and it is not detected there either.

 

It seems that both the motherboard's M.2 slot and the original SSD have failed simultaneously (likely due to a short circuit).

 

Regarding the hardware repair for the laptop itself, the link you provided seems to be for the USA. I am currently located in Japan, specifically in the Osaka region.

Could you please provide the contact information or locations for HP Authorized Service Centers in or around Osaka? Alternatively, is there a mail-in repair service I should use for HP Japan?
