HP 2000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Was trying to figure out why my Uncles computer was extremely slow. I could hardly get it to do anything at all. Hard drive is 500GB and only half full with little in changes to it over a long period except as used by chrome. He is on the net alot watching certain sites, using Facebook and movies that are loaded on.

Got a USB Bootable antivirus program and ran it. It didn't seem to actually do anything. but I got the HP diagnostics up and in doing startup tests I got a failure 3 times.

SMART Check: PASSED

FAILURE ID: RUFU4F-6069LB-MFKR5F-60T003

PRODUCT ID: A1V21AU#ABC

Hard Disk 1

Passed  memory test but says 4GB with 3.6GB usable

I am doing a full system scan for viruses now but it passed a couple quick scans.

Just wondering if failure is hardware or could something be doing this like malware or root

Hi:

The error code reported does not translate to anything but 'Failed.'

That doesn't leave much to go on, but 99% of the time you get one of those 24 character failure codes, it means the hard drive is on it way out and needs to be replaced.

If you can still get into Windows back up any files you need onto a portable hard drive.

Then replace the hard drive and reinstall W10.

You may want to consder getting a better performing, normally more reliable solid state drive.

Hi,

The failure id indicates that the hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

You will need to reinstall the OS on the new drive.

Hope it helps,

Thanks. I suspected virus to start but felt the test indicated that but I know some things can cause some bad stuff. I don't know if it explains the slowness (I get the product is old but it was flat yesterday and still bogging) and passed full virus with one adware found.

Definitely agree with ssd given prices but we'll see maybe a newer model even without ssd.

Thanks both for answering

You're very welcome.

Yes a hard drive that has issues can cause slowness, hanging, etc.

Then one day soon, it will quit working altogether.
