HP ENVY x2 - 15-c101dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Laptop recently stopped working, and it was in a Windows 10 diagnostic mode. Windows was unable to correct anything, so I restarted the system. After that it failed to get past the HP flash screen - not sure what this is, just the HP logo and the spinning timer. This will just come on for a few seconds, go away and start over, and repeat endlessly.

Pressing F2 I got into the System Extensive Test and received the following result:

Processor Check: MODULE MISSING

Hard Drive SMART Check: PASSED

Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED

Failure ID: 64W3X0-7N9B1G-MFGJMG-60V103

Product ID: J9J41UA#ABA

It's an older laptop model, from 2015. If it's a hard drive I might replace it, and if so is there any info on how to open this thing without destroying it. It was the touch screen for my home flight sim.

Thanks everyone, Tom

Hi, Tom:

Yes, you will need to install a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

c04440423.pdf (hp.com)

I recommend you replace the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

I recommend this model SSD which has the best performance for the price in my opinion.

Amazon.com: SanDisk Ultra 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5 Inch /7 mm, Up to 560 MB...

You can reinstall W10 for free by making a bootable USB installation flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

Thanks Paul.

I found a video and opened it up and have removed the drive. I really appreciate the quick reply. My initial concern was the:  Processor Check: MODULE MISSING line.

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't know what the Processor Check: MODULE MISSING notification message would mean.

Usually if a processor was bad or missing, the notebook would produce a beep code or blinking caps light and would not even turn on.

A little more information about the HP Envy laptop I have. The OEM hard drive is a Western Digital UltraSlim Tablet WD5000M22K which uses a seemingly rare SFF-8784 SATA connector, so the standard SATA SSDs, such as the one you recommended, are not compatible. Although I probably don't know where to search, but that appears to be the only HD I can find that uses that interface.

However there are various SFF-8784 adapter cards that will allow the use of either mSATA or M.2 SSD's to be mounted. I will try one of those as I have an extra M.2 SSD I can use. Any thoughts on these?

You're quite right.

I had no idea that wasn't a standard SATA SSD.

I think something like this would work fine, and then you install a WD Blue M.2 500 GB SATA SSD in it.

Amazon.com: Sintech M.2(NGFF) SATA SSD Card, for Upgrade WD Blue UltraSlim SATA 3 SFF-8784 HDD WD5000...

Amazon.com: Western Digital 500GB WD Blue 3D NAND Internal PC SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, M.2 2280, Up to...

The Sintech is exactly the one I was looking at, if only because they described the differences between M & B keys. The spare SSD I have is an M key, so I need to order another SSD anyway. My SSD also doesn't have SATA III in it's description, only the NVMe specification. Again, just posting the question for other members here, but are the NVMe and SATA III specs separate? I'm guessing the adapter just forwards the data connections, and the chip on the card is only for the power requirements?

Hi:

Yes, a NVMe SSD (with one notch) will not work in your notebook.

That adapter would not work with a NVMe SSD either.

It needs to be a SATA M.2 SSD (with the two notches), and the WD Blue M.2 SATA provides the best performance for the price, in my opinion.

NVME SSD's use a totally different storage controller that is not SATA.
