My HP laptop has twice unexpectedly crashed while in use. Not a blue screen, but a black screen with “The operating system did not shutdown cleanly. Reconstructing cache metadata”.
The last time was in April a few months ago, and I performed a hard factory reset and I received no more issues until today. Today it crashed and started back up had the same message before booting up. I’ve run several system scans and all the tests came back as passed. I had nothing open but Google Chrome at the time.
Not only that, but I had to restart it days prior after the screen began turning black while YouTube was in use. It’s roughly one year and seven months old, charge capacity still in the 90s.
I am not sure what prompts this “cache metadata” error, as I don’t particularly tax my notebook. Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I understand that your HP notebook is not working correctly. After long research, found information on online regarding "The metadata cache is used to contain all file system metadata"
Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)
To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.
- To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon
.
- Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
- Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
- Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
- Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
- Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I tried that, and everything was up to date. Unfortunately today it blue screened and did the same error message. It was a bit hot today, and it seemed to turn back on just fine, though. I’m still not quite sure how to fix it, as I am not very assured that I can remove any components to try and squeeze compressed air into. I don’t want to risk damaging it, and its warranty is expired.

Thank you for posting back.
I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. The last thing I can suggest trying to restore a computer back to the factory default, which will isolate whether it’s a software or hardware issue.
The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.
