HP Stream 14-ax0XX
Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit)

Initially I was upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 10 when it crashed leaving me with the error message:

Boot Device Not found

Hard Disk (3F0)

I first ran the Systems Diagnosis; both Memory and Hard Drive Passed.

I then tried to run the Recovery Manager from the supplied USB recovery media (having no CD drive installed) but this returned the following message:

Contact HP Customer Support

The System Recovery Media does not support this computer. You are not able to restore this system with this media.

I therefore have the following questions as I am based in the UK:

1) Looking at the forum it has been advised to order a replacement USB recovery kit however it has also been mentioned that the problem was the BIOS. In that DavidPK explained:

the data missing from the bios fields is what's causing this issue - Recovery Media reads this info in order to validate that they are being used on the machine they were intended for.

This was in response to a very clever user; quoting Ander_Y; who resolved the problem by:

Figured it out! On my Pavilion you hit Ctrl-A in the bios then go to "System IDs". Then I was able to type in the Build ID off my recovery media and the feature byte on the sticker under my machine. F10 to save then the recovery media recognized the computer properly and booted up!

What I identified on the HP Stream is that you cannot change these properties in the BIOS, they are greyed out but I'm guessing the provided USB Recovery Media was created from the initial build of the laptop. So, would resetting the BIOS to the Setup Defaults (by pressing F9) then allow the recovery media to read this info if at some time the BIOS had got amended unexpectedly? I am currently able to access the BIOS without problem.

It sounds too simple a solution.

I also tried F11 - System Recovery option but it too returns to the Boot Device error.

Question 2) I must also mention when entering the serial number on your website or even the product number it returns information on the model HP Stream 14-ax050sa whereas my laptop is HP Stream 14-ax0XX. Would this cause issues or even affect the problem with USB recovery media supplied?

Thank you. I await your recommendations.

@mseeya

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out!

As I understand you have an error message - "boot device not found"

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you know that the 3F0 Error requires a hard drive replacement if you've already attempted an OS re-installation and failed?

If you didn't, please do the above and if you already have, follow the below steps to resolve this concern:

Step 1: Perform a hard reset

HP Notebook PCs - Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset

Step 2: Restore BIOS default settings

Step 3: Test the hard drive using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (In your case, Skip to Step 4)

Step 4: Reseat the hard drive (here's a video that shows how to re-seat the drive: Click here

Step 5: Perform an HP System Recovery

If none of the above actions resolved the error condition, back up your personal data and then perform an HP System Recovery on the notebook. See one of the following documents for instructions:

If the issue persists, it's most likely a hardware connection failure and you will need to contact the HP phone support for a hardware service

HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately.

If the unit is under warranty repair services under the manufacturer's warranty will be free of charge.

Keep me posted,

Thank you Riddle_Decipher for getting back to me. I did all that you suggested., I watched the videos and went through the step by step stages to try to pinpoint the cause of the problem of which I'll supply the results to each of your initial questions below:

Step 1: Perform a hard reset
Result: Completed but it still returned the initial Boot Device Not Found error.

Step 2: Restore BIOS default settings
Result: No change.

Step 3: Test the hard drive using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI (In your case, Skip to Step 4)
Result: I ran the tests again referrring to the F1 System Diagnostics UEFI. By the way, it was not a hard drive test (as I did refer to a hard drive earlier but I should have said it referred to Software test as it has an onboard eMMC drive) and with both the quick test and the extensive test; both passed. So I am wondering about the reference to the error notice Hard Disk (3F0)?

Step 4: Reseat the hard drive (here's a video that shows how to re-seat the drive: Click here)
Result: Not possible as its onboard.

Step 5: Perform an HP System Recovery
Result: As mentioned before accessible via the F11 key but this does not seem to respond.

I note in your recommendation if all the above fails then its most likely a hardware connection failure. I'm just wondering how it could be if the eMMC drive passed all the tests?

In addition I have read that the Legacy Support in BIOS needed to be enabled (if it was disabled) or vice versa to then be able to run the F11 Recovery which sadly did not respond.

Where in that case do we go from here Riddle_Decipher and thank you for your recommendations?
