You will put the dvd in the drive and shut down the laptop. After a brief wait, power on and start tapping F9 key to choose to boot from the dvd-by using arrow key to move to and select/highlight CD/DVD. Then tap Enter key. The laptop should begin booting from the dvd.
You will delete everything on the laptop by deleting the partition XP is installed on-and any others. This Guide will walk you through it. Other than seeing "press any key to boot from cd" it should have exactly what you need. (remember F9 to choose cd/dvd on DV2000)

Windows 7 is probably about the best you could hope for in upgrade. Windows 10 is much too demanding for that age laptop. It actually has over heating issues in some Windows 7 installs.

I seriously doubt there are any hardware upgrades you could do to make Windows 10 run well on the DV2000. I mean, you could probably add more memory and possibly replace the hdd with an ssd drive which will be faster- but you are limited by the cpu and gpu on motherboard.
I have an old DV2000 series which is newer than that one- the DV2810- and it runs Windows 7 nicely. BUT-Internet browsing- slow as snails. The onboard gpu can not handle the graphics heavy internet smoothly anymore.
If you do not plan to use it for internet then Windows 7 may serve your purpose. There are numerous Windows 7 discs with license key available for dirt cheap on Ebay these days.
Btw- what specific model do you have in the DV2000 series? There should be a label on bottom which lists P/N (2) and full model number (1).

Hi Cheryl,
Not necessary to run Windows 10, Windows 7 should be sufficient.... hopefully HP will support 7 for a few more years till we can get grant funding for new computers. The product # is BU IDS GM FF DV2100 and the P/N is RM668AV. Our vet tech will need it for the internet though. If what I'm hearing is correct even if I get windows 7 on it, the internet is not going to work sufficiently. She needs email access as well. Criticial for her job.
Thanks
Christine

That machine has an Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 @ 1.84 GHz and 2gb of memory so it should run Windows 7 fine. As far as internet- basic internet should also work fine as well as email.
@Huffer may have some opinions on this.

Thank you Huffer. I do have concerns as to how long Microsoft will support Windows 7 sounds like support goes away in 2020. Is this a true statement? Thank you for joining in. I'm trying to be prudent in spending the money of oour non profit while getting a dependable laptop. Cheers Christine

If I do purchase Windows 7 do I get the 32 or 64 bit?
Cheers Christine

I would install Windows 7 32bit-since you have only 2gb of memory. Most Win 7 discs contain both 32/64bit and you choose during installation. Ebay is usually a good source for cheap discs. Have seen them for less than $30. Just be sure it includes license key.
Just an example- Windows 7 Pro> HERE
