Microsoft Windows 11

Aloha,

I am having issues ejecting my USB attached SSD. When I click to eject media from the quick assist menu, it disappears but never says it is safe to remove. When I check my devices in the settings, it says it is still attached but there is a driver error. This is happening over numerous different drives attached to the USB. I have updated drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled, and it is still occurring. Has anyone has this same issue or know how to fix it?

@MariaH808, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing issues ejecting USB SSDs on your HP Spectre laptop, where the device disappears from the quick assist menu but still shows as attached with a driver error. You've already tried updating and reinstalling drivers, which is a great first step.

Here are some additional steps to help resolve this issue:

Check Device Manager for Errors

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Disk Drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  • Look for any yellow exclamation marks or error messages.
  • Right-click the problematic device > Uninstall device > Restart your PC.

Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

Although this tool is hidden in newer Windows versions, you can still access it:

  • Press Windows + R, type:msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
  • Press Enter and follow the prompts.

Disable USB Selective Suspend

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings.
  • Click Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
  • Set it to Disabled for both battery and plugged in.
  • Click Apply and OK.

Update Chipset and USB Drivers from HP

Use ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ Tool

  • Instead of the quick assist menu, try using the full Safely Remove Hardware tool:
    • Press Windows + R, type:RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
    • Select your USB device and click Stop.

Try in Clean Boot Mode

To rule out third-party software conflicts:

  • Follow this guide to perform a clean boot:
How to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows
  • Then test USB behavior again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
