Hi HP Community,

I’m using an HP laptop with Windows 64-bit and Secure Boot is enabled, and I’m facing an issue while trying to update the BIOS using HP Support Assistant. The update fails with the following error:

“There is not enough free disk space to complete the system BIOS and device firmware update operation.”

Upon checking, I found that my EFI System Partition (ESP) was low on space (100 MB). I referred to some YouTube videos, created a new FAT32 partition (512MB) for EFI purposes using MiniTool, but I couldn’t delete or expand the original ESP. The system boots fine, but the BIOS update still fails due to ESP space issues.
Kindly provide solution for the issue.

@Sicaro2k1,

You can delete an EFI partition via command prompt in Windows Recovery Environment (Win RE).

If the newly created ESP is not working condition and the old ESP is deleted, the Windows would not be loaded, as boot system files are stored in the ESP.

Check if you can manually boot the system from the new ESP via F9 'Boot from EFI File.' If the new ESP works, you can then safely delete the old one, and the system will boot from the new ESP.

Turn on the notebook and immediately tap the F9 key for boot option menu. Select Boot from EFI File and hit the Enter key.

If you see two sets of file system that looks like a huge string of characters and numbers, one represents the100 MB ESP, and the other for the new 512 MB ESP.

Select one file system and click Enter. If you see EFi, click on it and navigate to \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi and click Enter to reboot. Do the same thing for the other.

If you can boot into Windows from either file system, the new ESP is working and ready to delete the old one.

Let me know how it goes.
