A couple of months ago, I downloaded a bios update from the HP Support Assistant. Since then, every so often when I try to wake up my pc I will receive an error that the pc has encountered an issue and needs to restart. It then goes through a reboot process and seems to work ok for a little while. It doesn't do it often, but enough that it's clearly a problem. I don't really know if the bios update did anything or not, but I never had this issue prior.  The last time this happened, I ran sfc /scannow and it found and repaired some damaged files. I've run windows updates, and a couple of other suggested updates for the support assistant, but it still seems to not want to wake up correctly every now and again. I've googled it a few times but can't seem to find anything that really matches my issues, some come really close but there's enough doubt that I don't want to just start rooting around.

A little help and assistance here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi @KnightLife,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing issues after a BIOS update.  I would request you to please follow the below steps to resolve the issue.

Reset the BIOS Settings:

  • During the startup of your PC, press the appropriate key (F10, F2, Delete, or Escape) to enter the BIOS setup.
  • Look for an option to restore to default settings or optimized defaults. This can sometimes resolve issues caused by BIOS settings changes.

Reinstall BIOS Update:

  • Verify if there is a newer BIOS version available on the HP Support website. If so, download and install it.
  • If no newer version is available, you can try re-flashing the existing version, in case the initial update was corrupted.

Check for System File Corruption:

  • Run the Windows System File Checker to check for and repair any corrupted system files that might be causing the issue.
  • Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow then press Enter.

Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that Windows is completely up to date with all the latest patches and updates, as these can sometimes resolve unexplained errors.

Perform a System Restore:

  • If the issue began after a specific update and persists without a clear solution, consider using System Restore to revert the PC to a state before the issue began, if there are restore points available.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Ok, restarted into bios, and restarted with restoring defaults. After that, I checked the Support Assistant.  There were no new updates so I downloaded and reinstalled the latest bios update. One that was done I ran scannow, and it found no integrity violations. After that, a auick windows update, and now we just sit and wait, and see if the error pops up again.
Thank you for the help.

EDIT:

was using my laptop today, it went into sleep mode. Went to wake it up, and received the message that an error occurred, it updated and then restarted. Tried the system restore, got another error message, saying it cannot do that. Tried a reset with keeping files, same error. Tried a complete reset same error.

Got a bad feeling about this.

Edit 2:

ran windows repair with windows update, installed, then restarted. Ran the restore, and so far ok. Except now my external keyboard won’t work. It’s detected, but won’t type. Tried different usb ports, uninstalled and reinstalled it, same thing. I’m really tired if this garbage now. It’s always something.

Edit 3:

everything seems to be working fine, outside of my external keyboard. When I plug in the usb dongle, the printer is detected, but wont type. I can, however, connect it via Bluetooth, and it works, so I'll take it for now. Not really how I want it to connect, but i can live with it.

Did all of these, and today after I went to wake it out of sleep mode, received yet another "your computer has a problem and needs to restart."

I've done a restore, even tried reinstalling windows. Still having issues.
