Hi everyone, my name is Baz and it's the first time on the community forum. Can anyone guide me as to whether my HP Envy TS17 Notebook PC can be upgraded to Windows11 and if so what are the procedures in going from BIOS to UEFI. I am partially computer savvy so it would be a bonus if you could  provide me with simple step by step instructions. I look forward to everyones responses. Thanking you in advance.

Hi:

Your PC does not meet Microsoft's minimum W11 hardware requirements to run W11 but there is an easy way to do an in-place upgrade from W10 > W11 on unsupported hardware.

Do you know that W10 is not installed in UEFI mode?

It should be if your notebook has an Intel 4th generation core processor.

Run the Windows system information app.

There will be a BIOS mode line about 1/3 of the way down on the report.  It will either be on UEFI or Legacy.

Down the list from that line there should be a Secure boot state - on or off.

Let me know what those settings are on.

Then we will go from there.

Hi Paul,

thanks for your response.

The processor is an i7-3610QM CPU@2.3GHz, 2301 MHz, 4 core, 8 logical processors.

BIOS is Legacy and the Secure Boot State is unsupported

Back to you and thank you.

You're very welcome.

Changing the BIOS mode to UEFI is optional since the PC doesn't meet Microsoft's W11 processor requirements of an Intel 8th gen core or newer and it doesn't have a TPM 2.0 security device.

Before you make the file conversion, check your notebook's BIOS to make sure that there is a setting to disable legacy mode.

If there isn't, you cannot conver the file system from MBR to GPT and the BIOS cannot be set to UEFI mode.

If there is a disable legacy mode setting, watch this video for how to convert the file system from MBR to GPT.

How To Convert MBR To GPT For Free In Windows 10

After you make the conversion, you have to restart the PC, immediately tap the ESC key to get the menu of options.

Select the F10 setup option and press the Enter key.

Find the legacy mode disable/enable setting and disable it.

If the secure boot setting is separate from the legacy mode setting enable the secure boot setting, save the settings, restart the PC and the notebook should start in UEFI mode with secure boot enabled.

If there is no secure boot setting, then you can't enable secure boot.

Next, watch this video, which is the easiest way to do an in-place upgrade from W10 > W11 in my opinion, and I have tried many different ways to do this during the last 3 years.

How to Install Windows 11 on Unsupported PC in 2025 (New Easiest Method, No CMD)

Download the W24H2 ISO file and use that (3rd option).

Download Windows 11

You can download the free 7-Zip file utility from the link below. The top line is for 64 bit.

You'll have to repeat this procedure each October when Microsoft rolls out the new builds because a PC that does not meet Microsoft's minimum W11 hardware requirements will never automatically get the update to the next build.

Other than that, your PC will continue to get the monthly cumulative and other updates.

That's only a minor inconvenience to have continued OS support beyond October of 2025.

If things don't work right on W11, you have 10 days to easily go back to W10 as long as you don't delete the W1 upgrade files or the Windows.old folder.

Once again you do not have to convert the file system to GPT/UEFI in order to upgrade your PC to W11.
