Microsoft Windows 11

So I bought a WD_BLACK 1tb NVMe internal gaming ssd which is a gen4 pcie m.2 2280 and runs 7250 mb/s in which I wanted to replace it with the initial ssd that came in when I bought my 15-dy2xxx hp laptop a couple of years ago. I swapped out the old ssd with the new one and when I tried booting up my laptop it wouldn’t allow me too saying”boot device not found”. I tried everything like making sure it’s installed right and etc right im now just confused and lost

@fode2,

Did you install Windows on the new SSD?

If not, you are likely to have that error on bootup.

You can use HP Cloud Recovery Tool to create a bootable recovery usb drive which installs Windows, drivers and HP software on.

You need a 32 GB usb drive. This article shows how to use the recovery tool.

Do I have to do this process with the new nvme ssd I want to installed or the previous one?

There are a couple of other options to install Windows on the new SSD.

You can clean install W11 with a bootable Windows installation usb drive created with Microsoft Media Creation Tool from the W11 download site. This requires only 8 GB usb drive.

Download Windows 11

I think your 15-dy2xxx model comes with an Intel Core 11th gen processor, which requires that Intel RST storage controller drivers be supplied to the Windows installer during the W11 installation. This means you need to go through the extra process. This thread shows what needs to be done.

Another way to install W11 is to clone the factory-installed SSD to the new SSD. You need to put the old SSD back in the notebook and place the new SSD in an external enclosure and connect it to a usb port on the notebook. Western Digital provides Acronis software for cloning.

You need to get an external enclosure like this.

For the cloning to work, the stock SSD needs to be healthy, and W11 on it must be in good working condition.

So basically, there's no super easy way to install Windows on the new drive.
