HP Recommended

Received my new 17-cp3 XXX. Replaced the 1 TB SSD with a new four TB SSD and loaded Linux Mint from a USB drive. Loaded fine, rebooted, and did not recognize the networking hardware in the laptop. Has anybody else had this problem and found the solution to it?

I can imagine how frustrating that must be. You’ve just unboxed your brand-new HP Laptop 17-cp3xxx, upgraded it with a spacious 4 TB SSD, and successfully installed Linux Mint… only to find yourself staring at a desktop with no network connection and no sign of the Wi-Fi hardware. Let’s clear up why this happens and what HP can (and cannot) provide.

HP’s Driver Availability

  • HP’s official Support & Drivers page only lists drivers for the operating systems your model was shipped with (most often Windows 11 for the 17-cp3xxx series).
  • HP does not publish or officially support Linux drivers for consumer laptops, which means you won’t find a Linux driver package on the HP website for your Wi-Fi or Ethernet hardware.

    What you can do next:
  1. Install community drivers
    • For Realtek: search the Linux Mint or Ubuntu forums for your exact chipset model number (e.g., “RTL8852BE Linux Mint driver”).
    • For MediaTek or other chipsets, many drivers are hosted on GitHub by open-source developers.
       
  2. Use a temporary USB Wi-Fi adapter
    • While getting the built-in card working, a cheap USB adapter with known Linux support can help you get online to download updates and drivers.
