Hm, maybe it's not IDT driver for all series, but some other audio driver?
Looks like for G1 series that is the solution, but maybe older ones (like 6550b) and newer ones (like G3) use some other audio driver? Not sure ofc, because I don't own them so I don't know.
Do you have installed Hotkey Support with .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0?

Nope..I dont know. I have installed all the driver I found in this list:
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/readIndex?sp4ts.oid=7834513&swLangOid=24&swEnvOid=4192
In that page I found:
and the Audio driver:
Conexant High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver
I really don't know.

Thanks for the solution, this indeed fixed the problem of both Fn + f8 keyboard mute and speaker mute button not chaging to orange color on my official laptop - HP Elitebook 840 G1.
After searching the web for several days I finally could get back to normal state post moving from 8.1 to 10 with IDT Audio W8.1 driver.
I found a W10 IDT Audio driver at this site http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/IDT/IDT-High-Definition-Audio-Driver-61065040-for-Window... this driver seem to be buggy as it doesn't fix the mute button issue. Also, I don't know why hp site doesn't list this driver.
I request HP to address this issue in the W10 driver and list it as well. Hope someone looks at this blog.

I had the same problem with my 450 G3 ProBook but i have noticed that i have disabled the "SmartAudio CPL" application from the startup programs.
Once i fired up my DTS Audio Control Panel, the mute and the microphone button started changing color and work again.
So i guess if you have cleaned your startup programs like i did ! Make sure to leave the your Audio Driver program checked in my case it was "SmartAudio CPL"
Good luck 🙂

Had the same issue on a Probook 450 G4 with Win10, after installing the latest driver button stopped changing colors (but worked, it de/activated the mute).
It's solved by uninstalling the audio driver, rebooting and then intalling again the latest audio driver.
Maybe just luck, maybe helps someone 🙂

NOT WORKING for me.
Probook 450 G4 Windows 10 64-bit.
Uninstalled the audio driver taken from here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-probook-450-g4-notebook-pc/10477253
rebooted;
installed new version of driver, taken from here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-probook-450-g4-notebook-pc/10477253/document/c05519670/
* as the alert says for some vulnerability.
rebooted again;
Nothing happens. Button still not working at all (no un/mute and no light.
Same is for the Wi-fi button.
I am desperate!!! The laptop is brand new, for work at the office. I cannot use it in the office withot a working sound button :((((
