Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Trying to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the upgrade fails due to insufficient space in the Recovery Partition on drive 😧

The size of the Recovery Partition is setup at factory installation by HP and it only leaves about 3GB which is insufficient for the Windows 10 upgrade to start as the upgrade begins by creating files in the Recovery Partition.

I do not want to delete the Windows 8.1 recovery files that already exist on the 😧  Recovery Partition from the factory build and in fact I do not think the o/s will allow me to delete those recovery files.

Any help in how to complete the Windows 10 upgrade is appreciated.

Don't know why the Win10 Upgrade is trying to write to your Recovery partition -- but it should NOT be doing that.

My guess is that you're trying to do the Upgrade through Windows Update -- which is the least reliable and most problematic way to do this.

Instead, I would suggest that you use this link to create Win10 install media:  Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help

Then, insert that media into your PC (while Windows is still running) and launch the Upgrade from there.

Good Luck

Hi WaWood,

I used the link you provided ( Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help) and successful installed Windows 10 with the 1st option that downloads the Install to my notebook. The install still placed and ESd file and some other file in the Recovery Partition and actually filled up the space however the installation continued and once complete there was only a WIndows 10 empty folder left in the Recovery Partition (Drive D:).

So all is good and thanks for pointing me to the correct link for the install.

My guess is that you are correct in that the Windows 10 download that was failing was from the Windows Update process.

Much appreciated and have a great 4th July.
