What do you think about my second question? Will I encounter a problem using the NVMe drive when I restore my system from a backup that is using the Intel RST driver?

 

Along the same lines, will I encounter a problem when I use the recovery USB drive that I created with the HP Cloud Recovery? That installation should be trying to use the Intel RST driver as well, since that is the factory configuration, right?

I don't believe that you will have a problem with that.

 

I just hope the Cloud recovery tool will work on the smaller capacity NVMe drive.

 

If it doesn't, worst case scenario is you will have to clean install W10.

Did you figure out how to get the Optane memory to show up?

 

I found this article online. 

 

It's not for HP PC's specifically, but it appears you need to re-enable the Intel Optane memory in the BIOS if it isn't showing up in the device manager.

See if there is a BIOS setting in your notebook somewhere to do that.

 

You can access the BIOS setup menu by pressing the ESC key as soon as you turn on the PC to get the menu of options.

 

Select the F10 setup option, and press the enter key.

I did create a separate post about re-enabling Optane Memory in BIOS setup, but the response I got pointed to an article that describes how to do it in Windows, so it wasn't useful to me. The article you linked here is actually exactly what I need, even though it is for a non-HP system. The BIOS setup images look exactly the same as mine, so that BIOS code is probably common code that came from Intel.

 

That being said, the entire process that is described looks much more involved than I expected, so I think it is best to just take your earlier advice and leave it disabled since I'm replacing it with an SSD drive anyway. The drive should be here later today, so I won't have to be out of commission much longer. I'll post back my results, especially with respect to whether the cloud recovery or system backup recover works with the non-Optane drive.

I guess as long as whatever you did didn't disable the slot, then you should be fine.

Hmm. I don't think I disabled the slot, but I'll keep that possibility in mind. I can still see the Optane Memory in the system information, so I think the slot is still active, but it is the RAID driver that is disabled.

Just wanted to give a final update. I received the M.2 SSD drive and replaced both the SATA drive and Optane memory with it. The system got a CMOS error and then reconfigured itself. I then used the USB key that I created with the HP Cloud Recovery tool to install the factory default Windows 10. This worked just fine, which makes sense because the Optane drive is an option, so the recovery image needs to work with SATA, Optane, or SSD options. So far, everything was going smoothly.

 

I then tried to restore my system backup. The restore completed fine, but when I tried to boot it got an immediate error. Not sure if it is due to the driver being incorrect or problems with the partitions not matching. The bottom line is that the recovery from a system backup did not work.

 

So I re-installed Windows via the Cloud Recovery tool and simply had to install my applications again. Took some extra time, but was not really too bad, since all my personal files were automatically restored by OneDrive, Firefox stored all my settings online, and email is stored on the server. So nothing was lost, just took some time to go through installing my applications. On the positive side, I can definitely notice the performance improvement due to the M.2 SSD drive! Almost makes it worth the headache 😀.
