Having got a new laptop just before Christmas I spent most of Christmas sorting out a problem caused by me not making a restore point and some glitch with new drivers. Despite Blue Screen loop and F11 not working I had to resort to wiping the SSD and a temp OS of Win 10 Pro. This is not what was originally on so will not activate, but works for now.
To the question. As there is no License number on the machine as it is self verifying, and there is NO recovery disc/software available for this lap top, how can I put the original version of Win 10 back on when I have no disc or License available?
Second problem is that my external DVD RW is recognized under win 10 Pro but not by bios so will not load software? Tried media creation tool but does not recognize DVD to work. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!
Any help will be appreciated.

Hello @PeterHD .
Go in the Windows search engine and type Command Prompt, then right click on it and select Run as administrator, as follows:
https://h30467.www3.hp.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/58186i492549DFCD54312E/image-size/large?v=1....
Enter the command according to the OS you are using:
For Windows 11, 10 and 8.1:
wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey
Then with the key that appears you can activate and move to Windows 10 Home and for this you can follow the instructions in the following link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04640037
With the above, you save time in performing a clean installation, if you have a limited internet plan it will not be a good option to download the operating system again, besides you will not have to wait so long and have to use external storage media.

Hi, @PeterHD
I think the easiest thing to do would be to use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.
Here is an info link for how to use that utility...you will need a 32 GB USB flash drive to create the recovery media with.
HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool (Windows 10) | HP® Customer Support
I checked the database...Your PC's product number (31Y97EA#ABU) is supported.
You probably have to enable legacy mode in the BIOS and disable secure boot in order to boot from a DVD if it is not being recognized as a bootable device.
Do yourself a favor and install Windows with a USB flash drive.
