Windows 11. Pavillion I7.
Windows fails to boot as per error code. Tried recovery USB but that also fails. How do I access windows recovery files or a minimum windows install to try on a different USB device just to get me up and running to do a full windows reinstall? I don't want to lose my personal files!

Hi @RecoveryUSB,

Dealing with error code 0xc0000001 is stressful, as it typically indicates a corrupted boot configuration or a missing system file. Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool is the right path, but it is important to know that it is designed to return your laptop to its "factory out-of-the-box" state, which usually erases all data on the primary drive unless a specific "Back up files" option is available during the process.
- Attempt to trigger the built-in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) without the USB.
- Turn off the laptop completely by holding the Power button for 10 seconds.
- Press the Power button to turn it back on, and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly until the "Choose an option" screen appears.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options, and click System Restore to see if a recent "snapshot" of your files and settings exists before the error occurred.
- Access and rescue your personal files using the Command Prompt.
- From the Advanced options menu in WinRE, select Command Prompt.
- Plug an external USB hard drive or flash drive into your laptop.
- Type notepad.exe into the black window and press Enter; once Notepad opens, click File > Open to use the file explorer window to copy and paste your "User" folders (Documents, Photos, etc.) onto your external drive.
- Run the HP Cloud Recovery to reinstall the Operating System.
- Insert the Recovery USB you created and restart the laptop, tapping F9 immediately to enter the Boot Menu.
- Select the USB Flash Drive as the boot device and follow the prompts until you reach the Recovery Manager screen.
- Select Factory Reset or System Recovery only after you have confirmed your files are backed up, as this process will reformat the drive to install a fresh version of Windows 11 and HP factory drivers.
For a detailed walkthrough of the tool you are using, see the official HP PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool guide.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Hi folks, just seen a similar post on this forum. I am currently following the declared solution ... Download HP Cloud Recovery Tool from Microsoft site. A bit fiddly with the "Run as Administrator". Can only do from app on the start menu.
The tool accepted my model ID which was almost impossible to read on the underside of my laptop. Font size 0.000001 !
So currently hopefully creating Recovery USB for my build of laptop.
Next question is will the Recovery USB do a full factory reinstall or just windows 11? Ideally the latter as I still want my personal files.
