My PC was acting up when I went to some websites.  So after resetting everything that I could find, I decided to do a windows 11 reinstall and delete my everything.  So I backed up all my data. I then got the media creation tool from Microsoft. I then tried to reinstall windows.  However, the tool could not find my hard drive.  So I found on an HP site that I needed to get the sp124298.exe file get drivers.  I did that and added it to the flash drive. After loading the drivers I was able to see the SSD hard drive.  I then told it to reformat the drive.  It appeared to make 2 or 3 partitions.  One about 100M (I think) and a smaller one, and then the rest of the drive.  After formatting and do some initial loading of stuff it re-booted the PC. It then came back with the 3F0 hard drive error.  I have tried all the recommendations from similar posts.  I have run all of the diagnostics from the BIOS including the hard drive and everything is clean.  I have tried using the HP cloud recovery tool.  I tried holding down the power button for 30 seconds with no power cord to reset the internal memory.  I have tried 3 party Hard Disk tools to try to reformat it again.  Same thing.  When it boots it appears that it goes to the flash drive.  Then a white screen flashes but I can not read and then I get the 3F0 error.  Is there a way to get past this?

Hi @Greg3818,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The Hard Disk 3F0 error means your PC’s BIOS cannot find a bootable device. Since the drive partitions properly and diagnostics pass, the boot manager is likely writing to your USB drive instead of the SSD. Here is how to fix this:

Step 1: Force the Boot Manager to the SSD:

Because you have a blank SSD after formatting, you need to make sure the Windows Boot Manager is prioritised over the USB drive, and that Secure Boot settings are configured correctly.

  1. Turn off your PC, turn it on, and immediately press Esc to access the Startup Menu.

  2. Press F10 to enter the BIOS Setup.

  3. Navigate to Boot Options (or System Configuration).

  4. Look for the UEFI Boot Order and ensure that OS Boot Manager (or your internal SSD) is at the top of the list.

  5. If you cannot find your SSD, try toggling your Secure Boot or Legacy Support/CSM settings. (i.e., Disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Support, save, and exit. If that doesn't work, revert them to your original settings.)

  6. Press F10 to save changes and exit the BIOS.

Step 2: Remove the Flash Drive Promptly:

During a Windows installation, the PC restarts several times.

  1. Leave the USB flash drive plugged in for the initial Windows setup and file-loading steps.

  2. The exact moment the PC shuts down or restarts for the very first time, unplug the USB drive immediately.

  3. Leaving it plugged in allows your PC to accidentally boot back into the USB installer, which flashes the white screen and can trigger the 3F0 error.

Step 3: Perform a Custom Installation to Avoid Overlapping Drives:

If the first two steps do not allow the PC to load properly, you may need to recreate the installation media to ensure the files are generated cleanly.

  1. Recreate your Windows installation media using Microsoft's Windows 11 Media Creation Tool on a different, healthy computer.

  2. Boot from the newly created USB.

  3. When you reach the partition screen, manually delete every partition one by one until you have a single block of "Unallocated Space".

  4. Select this unallocated space and click Next (do not manually create partitions). This forces Windows to create the bootable partitions in the right locations.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I just got to checking on this today.  It did not resolve the issue.  The first two steps I had already tried but I tried again. I tried the 3 item which was to recreate a startup device. I put it on a USB flash drive. I put it first in the boot order, it still just appears to go to the hard drive and the same error appears.  I disconnected the SSD drive just to see what would happen.  I still get the same error.  So not sure where to go from here.  I can not seem to get it to stop to try to reformat the drive.  Any other ideas?
