When i try to download  Windows 7 from the Microsoft site with my Product Key -  following error:

the product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options

how can i go back to what was pre installed on my PC without having to buy a copy of windows 7?

See if Paul_Tikkanen 's suggestion in this thread work for clean installation of Windows 7: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/want-windows-7-back/td-p/592555...

You need Windows 7 Home Basic 64 bit.
