Hello! I have an U.are.U 5300 Fingerprint device and I'd like to know if it can work with Windows Hello Fingerprint. I've already installed the original drivers but I want to use it for fingerprint scanning. I need your advice. Thanks

Hi @Hashim68

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The U.are.U 5300 fingerprint reader is not natively compatible with Windows Hello Fingerprint unless it uses a Windows Biometric Framework (WBF) driver specifically designed for Hello integration. Most versions of the 5300 use proprietary SDKs and do not support Windows Hello out of the box.

What you can do to check and attempt compatibility

1. Verify if the WBF driver is installed

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Biometric Devices.
  • Right-click the U.are.U 5300 device > Properties.
  • Under the Driver tab, check if the provider is Microsoft or HID Global and if it mentions WBF.

If it uses a custom or legacy driver, Windows Hello will not recognize it.

2. Try installing a WBF-compatible driver

  • Visit: HID Global Drivers – DigitalPersona
  • Look for a WBF (Windows Biometric Framework) driver for the U.are.U 5300 or DigitalPersona series.
  • Download and install the driver.
  • Restart your system.

If a WBF driver is available and installed, Windows Hello may detect the device under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition.

3. Check Windows Hello availability

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
  2. Under Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello), click Set up.
  3. If the option is grayed out or says no compatible device found, the reader is not supported.

Only fingerprint readers with certified WBF drivers can be used with Windows Hello.

If the U.are.U 5300 is not compatible with Windows Hello, you can still use it with:

  • DigitalPersona SDKs for custom authentication
  • Third-party apps that support fingerprint login using the device’s native SDK

These solutions are typically used in enterprise or kiosk environments.

Let me know what you see in Device Manager or if you’d like help identifying the correct driver. You’ve done everything right by checking compatibility—I’ll be here to guide you further if needed.
