@Pachomius, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If Microsoft Word is launching automatically when you start your HP laptop, even though it's not listed in the Windows Startup folder, it might be due to one of the following reasons:
Check Task Manager Startup Tab
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Click the Startup tab.
- Look for Microsoft Word or Office in the list.
- If found, right-click it and select Disable.
Check Word Options
- Open Microsoft Word.
- Go to File > Options > Advanced.
- Scroll down to the General section.
- Make sure “Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view” is unchecked.
- Also check if any Add-ins are causing Word to launch:
- Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, select COM Add-ins and click Go.
- Uncheck any suspicious or unnecessary add-ins.
Check Windows Settings for Apps Restarting Automatically
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Scroll to Restart apps.
- Turn Off the toggle for “Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them after I sign in.”
Check Scheduled Tasks
- Press Windows + R, type taskschd.msc, and press Enter.
- In Task Scheduler, look under Task Scheduler Library for any tasks related to Word or Office.
- If found, right-click and Disable the task.
If none of these steps resolve the issue, you can also try repairing Office:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Office, click Modify, and choose Quick Repair.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution. Select "Yes" on the bottom left to say “Thanks” for helping!

- Scroll to Restart apps.
- Turn Off the toggle for “Automatically save my restartable apps when I sign out and restart them after I sign in.”
Have a nice weekend.
