HP Notebook - 15-ay020na (ENERGY STAR)

When the computer boots up immediately after the hp splash I get the above message followed by error code 0xc0000221.

 

Pressing F1 brings me back to this screen

Pressing F8 then any option 1-9 brings me back to this screen

 

Booting from USB brings up amongst others F11 -System Recovery. This brings the same message but error code 0x0000098.

Pressing F1 on this screen brings me back to the original blue screen.

Pressing Esc  brings the start up menu if I select F9 - Boot manager and select USB Hard drive (this contains WIn10) I get the windows setup page.  I get the option to repair your computer where all of the options don't work.

 

For example Start-up repair eventually says it couldn't repair the PC and to try other advanced options.

Uninstall updates - and uninstalling update gets the message we ran into a problem and wont be able to uninstall the latest features/quality updates.

System restore - no restore points created (even though I did create one)

System image restore - We couldn't fine one

 

In sheer desperation I bit the bullet and re-installed Windows but after a reboot you guessed it the blue screen had returned!

 

I've now completely ran out of ideas how to fix this.  Does anyone have any ideas before I take a hammer to it 😀

Hi:

 

When you google the first error, it pertains to a hardware problem--most likely attributed to a faulty memory module or hard drive.  I doubt it is the hard drive.

If the memory module is bad--even if it passes the diagnostics test, that can cause all kinds of issues.

 

Unfortunately, your notebook only has one memory module, so there is no free way to check if the memory is bad such as removing one chip at a time and running the notebook to find the bad one.

 

So, the first thing to try would be to run the F2 hardware diagnostics test in the menu of options you saw where the F10, F9 and F11 options are.

 

You may actually get a failure report.

 

If not, you would have to risk some money on buying a new memory chip in hope that it resolves the problem.

 

There is no guarantee that it will, and that is the problem.

 

If you have another DDR3L memory chip from another notebook or one you can borrow, you can test it out and see if it fixes the issue.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply - previously I had ran all diagnostics and everything was ok.

 

Since posting I have tried installing windows again and discovered another problem 😪

Towards the end of installation I get a screen that says- Why did my PC restart.  There's a problem that's preventing us...etc

 

It says make sure you are connected to the internet so I contacted via wifi.  I get the Just a moment and.....back to the Why did my PC restart screen.

I'm thinking that the memory module is no good.

 I've ran a couple of diagnosics on the SDD and memory and they've come back clear.  I have managed to get Windows back on and the problem (for now) appears to have gone.  After a futher dig around the internet the problem could be to do with th 1910 Windows update and inparticular Laptop's like mine.

 

I've turned off Windows updates to see if that works but I think it's totally unacceptable to have to do this.  I think HP and Microsoft need to get together to sort this out - if this is the problem!
