OK, so I'm using the Microsoft media creation disk. I get to the page asking install or troubleshoot.
I go to command line:
Opens in x:\sources
Type 'dir', find 2 discs, one 29Gb, one almost 500gb
Type disk part, it opens. List discs, only the USB drive appears,
.
So, it appears everything is there but the driver is not working. There must be something I can do to sort this out.

You might be interested to know that I have managed to sort it out.
It required disabling the Optane storage, formatting the disk to remove partitions and using the HP image. Not an obvious route but I have got there in the end.
